Popping spokes: to rebuild or repair?

So I've searched and there has been a similar discussion. But I know the options but want to know people's viewpoint. (And no, I don't know how to do a poll).

I've popped a couple of spokes recently, as a result of having a poorly tensioned wheel (either poor maintenance or a shoddy build).

I replaced one spoke and retensioned the wheel superficially - w/o truing stand etc. Another spoke has popped (about 6 weeks later) - do I:

- replace the one spoke and do a patch up job on retensioning the wheel? (Like before).
- take all spokes out and rebuild the wheel from scratch with the old spokes (this will be my first wheel (re)build).
- buy new spokes and replace them all?
- bin the wheel and buy whatever seems to be on trend outside the coffee shops of Brick Lane?

Thoughts appreciated

Step 1, Unlace the wheel
Step 2, Bin the old spokes
Step 3, Rebuild the hub and rim (if it's still in good shape) with new spokes
Step 4, Get spotted trackstanding all over London.

^^oh, a touchy subject then?

If the rim is fine, surely new spokes and lacing the wheel the same way would be the most sensible.

I'm with Object on this one. If two have snapped there is clearly something dodgy in the build and once one has gone for a bit the others are under increased stress.

Also consider the fact that the new spoke will not have reached the same point of equilibrium with regards to different points being at different equilibriums as regarding elastic limits throughout the spoke. Poorly explained I know but I hope you get the gist of what I mean.

My concern is that this will be my first wheel build and the task may be made more difficult with worn / used rim (I'm assuming hub is OK).

@ BRM: not touchy - the builder wasn't drunk (never will be) and I don't think he'd hold it up as the best example of his handywork (Stonemason's not really the right place to do it). Dogs, am I being cryptic enough to keep your identity secret? :p

Man up and take up the challenge. If you fuck up so be it you will need to buy a new wheel or try again (the preferred route) if you succeed you will be a king amongst men.

did we re-lace with same spokes or new spokes, can't remember?! not hard to re-lace with new spokes if it is the case, got plenty at home.

from memory, the other wheels you had, the spokes had almost worn through.

@ Dale: New spokes, new hub, new rim IIRC. I'll need 32 x 288mm (I think) black anodised spokes & a truing stand. If you're up for it, you can come round & I'll pay you for spokes and with dinner for tuition.

@ Tommy: that sounds like a challenge! Yeah I quite fancy giving it a go - 3 cross can't be that difficult.

You might be getting confizzled with the nonsense hipster snowflake you did for shits & giggles.

ed zachery, we swapped it in!! so the spokes were "used" , so can't be held for blame ;) .

if you want black, drop by cavendish or condor.

rik, no problem.

mouse, I'm surprised you even asked.
do what you usually do;

take it into condor, prop it against the counter and say "just do it, won't you" with a dismissive hand gesture as you turn to leave

any decent quality stainless spokes will last years of heavy riding and are fit to use through several wheelbuilds.

Feel free to use different spokes, for example if you got the wrong sizes. Otherwise just mend it with one or two.
