| | Wheels for vintage Mercian build First of all, I'll take this opportunity to say hello! Ive been lurking for a while and contributed (though nothing worthwhile) to a few threads but this is my first 'new' thread so hello! I managed to pick up an old Mercian frame last week which is now on its way home for a renovation and respray. As its going to be between 4-6 weeks I now have some time to think of the other bits of the build. I'm going to keep to Campag as much as possible, Mercian are going to install Campag headset and BB as i think im going to go for the Record cranks. However the record hubs are fucking expensive so im not sure which way to go now. Im trying to keep it quite classic looking, probably black rims. I had a look at the Kiwicycles site, lots of choice but not really sure what would be suitable! Going to be mostly on the road but i'm about to move into west dulwich so I'm quite interested in Herne Hill as well. Any ideas welcome! |

| | nimbhus is telling you about the sexiest hubs, but they're stratospherically priced also. Others will give you good suggestions for wheels, but apart from the accurate warnings nimby gave you, also don't let any fat black blokes near you. Dodgy. The lot. I know its not PC, but its true. I can't stand them. Oh yes, welcome by the way. Oh, I'm fat, and black.......so I'm allowed to take the P. Last edited by GA2G; 22nd August 2008 at 10:18.. |

| | The Miche hubs are pretty good and a lot less than the Campag ones. Ribble have the low flanged ones currently at a very good price. Welcome - hope to see you at Herne Hill sometime soon. (You can hire bikes from them so if you fancy getting some riding in beforehand head down there this Saturday). |

| | Dude, welcome... Trawl the Bay for some old Campag track hubs and get some of those 27" rims from SJS (like the ones pj just bought)... I kinda regret not going full vintage Campag on my Mercian, but the wallet and patience wouldn't stretch... Do it justice... Actually is it 27" or 700? |

| | Mr Smith: Fair point, what i really meant was a 'simple' colour scheme ie that I im not looking for some screaming pink deep rims. Teenslain: Hi, what a fucking good question. Ive just got in contact with the guy I bought it from. If he doesn't know I guess Mercian will be able to tell me! So what did you go for instead of full Campag? |

| | The frame does take 700c wheels..............teenslain I just had a look at your Mercian, looks very nice, have you had it recently reprayed? Any idea what colour it is (if its in the Mercian catalogue)? Looks very similar to what I have just ordered! So...........should I break the bank for some Campag or Phil hubs or live in the real world? |

| | are the guys at mercian going to stick a campag RECORD bb in the frame? if so get them to stop immediately, those bb's are nice but they wont last on the roads. go for a sealed centaur road bb instead. that'll save you some money to go for the campag pista's jos are selling instead of miche or other not so good hubs. but be prepared to learn how to repack the grease in your hubs if you're getting the campag pista hubs. |
