What do Pro trackies ride on the street?

Anyone know/seen/got pics of what pro track cyclists use to get about town?

Do Hoy & Pendleton sit astride their Carbon-fibre race machines, modern geared bikes or old school track iron when off to the shops?

Do pro riders do outdoor training on fixed bikes? Any of them build up anything interesting for it, or just use a dolan training bike out of the box?

some ride geared race bikes round the inner bit of the velodrome when warming up/down, i guess these are also used as their training bikes?
being used to riding the perfect tool for the job on the track i would be surprised if they would want to compromise their training by using the wrong kind of bike to train on the road.(i.e. a track bike)

if i was a pro track cyclist i reckon i wouldn't bother riding to the shops. i'd prolly drive a car and save my legs for actual training.

I was just going to disagree, and then I remembered that I rode over to Hillingdon the other day, and was so knackered by the time I got there that I couldn't really be bothered with the track. So yes, I see your point. Doesn't mean I have to like it though...

well our lot all live close to manchester velodrome, which is where the majority of training takes place, they will also travel to various training camps in the team bus.

I imagine they drive or walk to the shops.

I doubt very much that they walk to the shops, unless it's close. Too much walking might lead to injury! :)

Probably use the tram to visit the shops, and with the correct travelcard could get to the Velodrome on the bus. Assuming of course, that their bikes are stored at the Velodrome. Otherwise they could only train at off-peak times. The tram lines render road training in the Manchester area somewhat hazardous.

It depends on the event doesn't it?

Sprinters aren't going to be doing much riding outside the track.
Pursuiters are going to be doing shitloads outside the track (like say the Tour de France!).

I think they ride geared road bikes.
Buts that just going by the women(not sure who, i think she was near pro or pro) was on the TV a while back that had got taken off her bike, then dragged along behind the car on her way to the track to train. Cant remember if she is still on the track. Anyone else remember seeing this? It was on some TV show.

i should clarify. i wasn't implying that track riders don't ride on the roads. but i reckon they'd prolly try to limit it to training rides, not as general transport, although i imagine some of them may ride to the track as a kind of pre warm-up.

the reason i say this is because recovery is fucking precious to elite athletes of any sort.

but then i don't know any pro track riders and i'm just guessing based on my experience of elite runners.

to continue this pointless ramble of an unanswerable question in a slightly different direction...

Why dont you see more people running places?

You get loads of people who run for excercise in the mornings & evenings, enter ameutuer races and triathalons.

But who actually runs for transport ?

Im sure for a fit person its just as pheasible, if not faster than cycling in some instances?

what a good question!

I used to run to work, depending where I was, and so did some of my mates. but that was back in the late 80's / early 90's when we were all poor..

a bit like now.

more people should run.

run, fatty, run.

i'm a runner, but i don't really run anywhere for the following reasons (even when i'm really fit):

- you get fscking sweaty
- you can't carry much stuff
- running most places useful involves dodging walkengers which really starts to shit you in peak hour in central london
- only practical for short commutes
- bike is quicker, easier and more fun.

I sometimes run for commuting (10k max distance), if I can have a shower there, and keep stuff there.
biking in is more fun for sure, but I like the fact that running really allows me to slip into my own world.
Cycling can do that, but not in London
