Lockring tool

Has anyone got a lockring tool I can use? Possibly at polo on sunday, or most likely somewhere central/ east ish early next week.

Thanks.

I have a query about lockrings tools, might as well stick it here...

Ive got a Formula lockring on my hub. It has 4 notches.

I used a regular single peg C-spanner to fit it which worked but that notch looks pretty mangled now, probably unusable!

So was wondering, should I have used some other type of tool? Perhaps something that engages more than one notch at a time?

I have the dura-ace lockring tool with chainwhip on it and that only got for one notch at a time so I think that should be enough.
On a sidenote. how often should you have to redo your locking of the lockring?

I've not needed to touch my lockring until I change cogs.

depends on which tool your using, some have different reaches than others. if it's the park one (with a single hook on one side and the multi prong on the other) then you should use the multi pronged side. if you're using the shimano chainwhip/lockring combo tool (the one with the black handle) then the single hook should be fine. is your lockring the black formula one or the silver one? if it's the black one, then it may not be the tools fault, those lockrings are generally fairly poor quality.

yup its the black one, I wouldnt say its poor quality, just that its aluminium. Everything designed for a purpose, and perhaps this was designed to be used with some 4 prong tool?

Alu lockrings are shite. Get yourself a £10 DA or Sugino one from hubjub.co.uk

I've heard people recommend fitting the sprocket and lockring, riding up a hill (or similar without skidding etc) to tighten the sprocket, and then giving the lockring a second tightening. After that, I think you're golden until changing cogs.

alu are pretty bad for street use (your right a material for a purpose) but formula have very low standards for their thread tolerances so there tends to be a lot of play in the lockring on the threads of a hub. but yeah, get a DA one or a surly one. sorted.

Thanks for that. Got a new wheel built for me the other week since the one that came on had striped threads on it and I'd had to retighten the lockring a couple of times. One day I just got sick of it and decided to check if it was normal. Turns out it was not. Then it needed it the other day on the new wheel and I thought I'd be out of luck on that as well. But now I know.

So, I didn't manage to make it to the polo today (my friends stayed in town longer than we had initially planned). Thanks hassanr for your help, but do you or anyone else think they might be able to help me out sometime this week?

Ta.

Can't promise, but I doubt you'll live or die by my presence. If it's a fine evening I might make the ride out.

Great. I'll turn up at pints ride a bit early so there's time for you to use it before hand.

Bump, I was wondering if someone could bring the following to east drinks tomorrow

1. lockring tool
2. chainwhip
3. a glass of ManTheFuckUp.

I don't want to repeat yesterday's double fail that was not being able to tighten one side of the hub and not getting the other cog off!
