Tree down Clapham Common South Side: Fatality

Encountered this on my way home, initially didnt see the van underneath it, sadly found out after i had taken the pics that the driver had died, afaik no one else has, the other passengers in the van are in hospital and the driver of the red car got away unhurt
My thoughts are with their families,
Stay safe people, although you can't exactly do much about falling trees!

Trees strike back.

Isn't there some kind of program to check big arse trees like this? I mean, in Oz there's a tree inspection program so that big trees don't touch or fall on power lines. Anything like that supposed to happen here?

Interviewed a local council employee about this sort of thing. There is a mandatory inspection programme but due to the number of trees, the rotation of inspection can be quite long (easily up to three years). It's also quite a difficult task to determine if a whole tree is going to fall over, as opposed to dangerous branches. It's a complicated an incomplete science performed by people who basically aren't scientists. Whilst they prevent a very large number of accidents, it's impossible to predict and prevent everything.
