Not initially. Because I haven't got around to it.

But it will be pretty obvious to them once I do get around to it.

I am sure these new rules will put off people who simply want to join up and post a few bits and pieces they might have for sale.

I realise this is fantastic news to some and will probably cause excitement (and possibly arousal) amongst those who spend their time clicking on For Sale threads they have no interest in just to complain that this kind of thing is outrageous and should be removed (The Lndfgss.com 'fuck off' brigade.)

I think this is a victory for the forum's moral police, I guess many newcomers who have little interest in the non-classifieds side of the forum will just take their bike frames and parts elsewhere - and more people here will also have to look elsewhere for bike parts, great news for BLB, Chainreaction and big business like ebay/gumtree.

Unfortunate side effect of all the recent aliasing I suppose ! C'est la vie :) + :(

oh maybe put the OTP stuff in its own folder?
there must be tons knocking about. it would flush out a lot of questions, and its the bulk of first time questions.

Tynan - If they are smart Tynan they would join and post 5 responses relating to their item for sale... a bit of marketing, get people thinking about it. then add a thread. or find someone who has an account that can do it for them. like i do on ebay

^^I still don't give a fuck about people trying to sell stuff. It's the mind-numbingly boring, derivative, redundant, I'm-really-just-an-easy-going-hipster-who's-finally-decided-fixed-is-an-accessory-I-can't-live-without-brackets-WORSHIP-ME!-close-brackets posts that irk me.

I hope you're not including me in any moral constabulary. I'd have to kill your socks off if you were.

I suppose you are right, it's not too hard to sling up 5 worthless replies in a thread here or there.

But I am sure some won't bother when, after all, they they can simply take their stuff elsewhere, to other bike forums, where they can offer their parts to people who are interested without all the shit they often get here, without being told to fuck off, without having to wait 48 hours or throw up a few arbitrary posts because they thought someone here might like their bike frame.

No, not at all, in fact I see you as lacking any kind of moral fibre whatsoever - like I say it's more those who spend their time opening For Sale threads they have no interest in - and then telling the seller to 'fuck off' (or otherwise stay away from 'my tribe').

But you are a racist.

I was on here for a while before I posted, getting a feel for the place, the characters, and getting answers to loads of questions (BB choice, toe overlap, to name just two I remember) using the simple expedient of search. I've been surprised by the number of people just signing up and selling or sounding off lately. It's a shame that common sense and good manners have to be enforced in this way, but they clearly do.

How many people are likely to be put off, do you think? I asking out of interest. I have never used the classifieds section of the site, but the point you raise is worth considering - but only if we can get some sort of estimate of the numbers of people likely to be put off.

I have no real way of telling, but my guess would be that it is not uncommon for people to be put off by filtering of any kind when there are places, like singletrackword, where they can sign up and post their crankset, two frames and headset in the cassifieds without having to wait for 48 hours or throw up a few arbitrary posts (let alone getting called a cunt and told to fuck off).

Unless this new system is pointed out to people, they might just sign up, find that they cannot post the stuff they thought we might be keen to look over and simply close the page and go elsewhere.

This is all guess work on my behalf, but not an unreasoned guess.

Does he know how the new system works ?

A sample group of one (N=1) has the highest margin of error possible as any statistician might tell you.

the problem with singletrack classfieds is that so many people use it your stuff gets bumped to page 4 before lunchtime.

and members can still tell you to f-off if they want to.

I think the newbies posting cuntish shit up is detrimental to the forum, honestly selling stuff in the classifieds is a different issue and not a problem.

(one day pinky and the brian might have something someone wants, and for a reasonable price)

And 'guess' must be some sort of statistical term of which I was previously unaware.

I take the point, but how many forumengers are likely to be adversely affected, even if the new members are made aware of the system?

This could be resolved by starting a thread called something like "New members flog your shit here".

Maybe make the private section more private? Any bugger can join up and see the private thread - which makes me worry considering some of the stuff that's been posted in there (not to give too much away...)

I know some places where you have to have a certain number of posts, or a certain level of reputation before you can access private parts...

We aren't preventing anyone from doing anything. People can still sell stuff. What we're doing is saying "Slow down, get used to the place. Look around and see how we function before you dive in and treat us like a market place or just a place for you to troll or ask questions that have been answered a thousand times before.".

We've always said that one of things that differentiates a spammer from someone else is that the spammer isn't participating in the community at all before he sells his wares. The classifieds section was never the raison d'être of the site, it was merely an obvious side effect of a community of enthusiasts who are all likely to both need to buy stuff and also to have a surplus of stuff of their own.

The community comes first, the classifieds comes second.

I very much doubt that the rules will deter someone who wants to sell something, if they're desperate to cash-in then 48 hours and a few hello's and posts is hardly a barrier to some hard cash in their wallet. But the small hurdle is enough to act as a deterrent to trolls, the lazy, and cold spammers.

This is a good idea, but I'm not sure if it will fully deter retards. With this system it's only a matter of time before new members can be full members. They don't have to earn it.

I was on another forum a while back, trials-forum.co.uk and they have a similar system in place. All new members get put into a pre-members forum, away from the main threads, where they can say what they like and start new threads etc.. Then every so often a moderator goes through the threads posted and picks out people to be validated based on punctuation, spelling, if the post is worth posting etc... Once validated they are full members.

Might be a bit of effort but it does work.
