Drill BB shell

So when we changed my BB yesterday at the BBQ, water+grease (no RUST!) came flooding out.

I realised that my BB shell is not drilled, is it safe to drill it, with like a 2 mm drill? Or will it collapse into itself once I start riding it?

A lot of bottom bracket shells come pre-drilled so it should be fine, assuming you drill a nice, clean hole.

Dont need to say use a centre punch or a twist drill and a hammer to get a nice point of contact for the 2mm bit do i?

if the water got in there must already be another hole, and i doubt there will be that much of a vacum

+1

If the holes are too small you will need to drill two.

I like that sentence I got to use all three senses of the word two/too/to.

My life's work is done here.

(or just drill a slightly bigger hole)

The water probably came in through the seatpost and other various places where it's not 100% water proof. So one hole should suffice.

Water often gets in around the seat post clamp.

a small 2mm hole will clog with it's own homogenous rust, and the capillary action of weater willl prevent flow.
so it needs to be a bit bigger than that i'd say. 3mm :)

The hole in the bottom of Lal's shell is huge. And it's kind of like three holes over lapping (if you can image what I mean? Like a pathetic olympic rings thing). I'll take a pic later.

My description from memory wasn't exact, but same idea:

You can see there's a bit of surface rust that I'll have to clean out one day. Better than not seeing it and having the BB rot from the inside though.

Ha! Just noticed that you can see a big patch of rubber missing from the back tires. Looks set up, but wasn't!

Dude, you'd better feel privileged, went into BC today to stock up on Phil Woods grease and they were out of stock with no idea when it's going to be available again. To think I used my precious resource on your BB only to be stabbed in the back!
