To be honest I have to agree with Tommy, using an alias for a throw away comment in reponse to/or for the purposes of propegating humour is fine with me (Hence the list I've just put above).

Starting an alias to troll the forum is a very different thing.

I am still fond of IMPIO and may resurrect him (see what I did) for any future theological debates. I feel this is justified seeing as if you go into his page his biog is that he is an alias of me.

i guess i did that. but i like to think i bought a lot of people happiness by suggesting the various slapstick possibilities for shimming a carbolite seatpost. if not, fair enough.

+1 on that, it's always disappointing. I've been prey to it myself just a couple of times. Normally i don't bite. But trolls can reveal themselves to be that after initally just bewildering people with their posts - there are way too many people on here who bend over backwards to help with the umpteenth request about OTP etc. and in the same way sometimes you want to engage with someone because in their mind they may not consider themselves a troll.

starcity caught wreck but s/he was evangelising in her book (I think) and not an alias as far as can be seen; meanwhile DirtyHarrySE1 caught wreck from me and it all kicked off a bit (- still no idea if he's an alias or not). But during that thread Shin said something that inspired me to respond with what I thought was a nice little piece of writing. If DHSE1 hadn't started it I wouldn't have written that.

as the arrival of alias shows, it feels like its too easy to create an alias, and most of them are just used to derail threads for sport, which seems to be a bit fucked up, can someone let me know when the joke wears thin?
