Tour de Hackney

Hi guys, hopefully some of you have already heard about Tour de Hackney, coming up on Sunday August 17.

The event's being organised as part of Shoreditch festival, and London Cycling Campaign (or, if you prefer to think of it this way, the entire city of London) needs anyone with a fleeting fancy in seeing lots of people, from all ages and abilities, out and about on bicycles, enjoying themselves, and generally showing any and all passing bystanders what a good idea it would be to either reclaim their bicycle from the garage, or start nagging mummy and daddy to get them one.

So yeah... basically, we need a group of 40 (currently on 22) more experienced riders to ride around with the bunch for the Tour circuit, and we need 10 (currently on 1) noble souls to stand with dignity at fixed points, marshalling riders in the correct direction. Needless to say we're going to make sure that everyone gets to move around a bit, and that nobody has to spend all day getting to know a lampost on London Fields.

It should be a good day out regardless, but volunteers would REALLY be helping LCC because the event was contracted on the basis of 50 marshalls, and if we can't get 50 marshals then we may have to return some of the funding received as part of the event. Overall this will mean less money to campaign for cycle paths (even if you yourself don't use them), less resources to hassle Boris when he does his next backtrack on cycling policy, and many more things to the good of the cycling community having to compete for fewer resources.

Hope that some of you ladies and gentlemen can lend your wheels to the cause, I know that many of you have ties with other organisations, and support various other causes to promote cycling, but we're all after the same things really, and a Sunday on a bicycle is never a bad idea.

If interested folks could, by Thursday, contact hello@lcc.org.uk then you'll be sleeping with a warm, moral glow inside you next Sunday.

cheers

julian

Julian, maybe a bit more info? start time, end time, route? usually with this crowd, an offer of free baubles, trinkets, or shiny stuff* will get some excitement from the hipsters around here.

* a crisp wrapper turned inside out for example will get you about 3 marshalls, I reckon offering up a NJS biro would get you the full 50 you need.

Sorry my reply was short. This sounds like a fantastic event and exactly the kind of thing I'd help with but unfortunately polo takes precedent.

Will there be a repeat at a later date if this one is successful?

I like the idea of sleeping with a warm, moral glow.

Yes I can definitely recommend the warm, moral glows for sleeping.

To answer the other questions... the event is scheduled to run between from 1pm-7pm, with riders meeting up at Shoreditch park... I have seen a map of the route, and so know that it exists (there are leaflets in shops across London, and the map can be found there).. if you email the office I'd imagine someone can scan it and email off a copy. I know for definite that the route is a 12mile circuit, all around the borough, but there is also a shortened form for anyone that can't quite muster the energy for the whole thing.

As for the gifts involved... all volunteers... to show that they are a responsible pillar of the group, will be provided with an LCC T-shirt (green, purple or red I believe) and whilst this might sound lame, they are actually a pretty nice design (I'm wearing mine now) and a good fit without too much cotton to flap around in the wind. Anyone that was at rollapaluza last night would have seen the LCC guys modelling them dutifully.

Hope that lot offers more guidance and incentive to come on down/up and join the festivities.

My polo skills are non-existant. Marshalling I can cope with. Have emailed.
