| | Stripped Phil front hub axel. Fixable? ![]() When I was servicing my bike tonight,I could not get both nuts loose, and after messing about with 2 allen keys, finally got the wheel off. After a little investigation. I noticed the above. Not sure how it happened. Besides removing the wheel, I have never messed with the hub at all. I have noticed that the wheel has been difficult to remove and tighten before, with the axle turning in place rather than the nuts tightening. Anybody seen this before? Are replacement axles available? The wheel still runs like butter. |

The allen key cap-head bolts then screw into the inside thread of the axle. | |

| | The thread is really mashed Dogs, no hope of ever getting the end cap to screw on. It takes for a few turns, then just slides up. As I said, I can ride it, but if I need to take the wheel off, I need 2 allen keys and a bit of patience. Had an email from Phil waiting in my inbox this morning. They are scratching their heads as to how it could happen. I'm gonna take it in to Brixton and get a replacement axle and cap (ordered), possibly under warranty. |

| | Just spoke to Ross at Brixton. We came to the conclusion that the cap had come loose, and that when I tightened up the bolts, I just mashed the threads on the cap (flexes muscles). I clean my bike every week or so. This involves taking the front wheel off to shine the flange (snigger). Never realised that the axle caps were loose. Some lessons are expensive... TODAY'S LESSON: Phil Wood axle caps sometimes come loose. When servicing your bike, remember to check these and tighten them (if necessary) using an 8mm allen key before putting the wheel back and tightening the track bolts.
