Newbie - El Cheapo Crankset and BB

Hi all!

Sorry to waste precious innernet space on such simple stuff but...

I'm moving back home to NZ next year.

So while I'm here, I'm planning to spend money on some good wheels and a Brooks seat - I will take those back with me. Back home, with a backyard and a garage (hurrah!), I will take the time and build myself a nicer bike.

My current frame is a cheapie. When I leave, I will sell or donate it here in Londontown.

I need to build it up cheaply - if it keeps me riding until April 09, I'm a happy camper.

Re: Crankset - I've looked through the Transmissin Database. It's full of beautiful Suginos etc. I can't seem to find anything cheap.

(Frame = Raleigh - english threading, 120mm rear spacing - I'm thinking Mavic Open Pros on Formula flip/flop hubs)

Can I get a half-decent crankset, chainring and bottom bracket for £50?

Whilst maintaining a decent chainline? Or am I being unrealistic?

Recommendations anyone?

cheers

Rudy

FSA Cranksets £40 from KiwiCycles:

I don't know how good they are, mind. A cheapo shimano BB (UN52?) should cost you about £12 from almost anywhere

The FSA set from Kiwicycles only comes with a 48t ring, so you'll have to swap that unless it's what you want (130BCD, so afaik fairly compatible).

There's also Condor's Sugino 'uno' crankset for £50 which can be had with choice of 42, 44 or 46 (?) chainring. Shimano UN54 BB is £8.95 from Parker International.

Great - thanks everyone!

I'll probably go with the FSA set.

Anyone got any experience or opinions with these:

About £60 including BB and delivery from states. Prefer them to the ones from kiwi...they look chunier and are 43T. If you buy cogs off them they will throw them in for no extra postage costs too.

Anyone had experience with ISIS bottom brackets?
My frame measures 108mm at the BB housing (don't know the proper name!) so should I get a 108mm bottom bracket...and will this line the crank up with my cog? Had no experience with this so any help would be appreciated.
