"Shift-by-wire" system

I know it's no help to a single speed or fixed gear but it's still quite interesting

Couldn't imagine it in proper mountain biking. It wouldn't last a minute down a trail.

Fair enough.... are there rules against electronic equipment on bike?

I spoke to a journalist at cycling plus about this and he said a co-worker had tried it and found it to be reliable and quick in test they did. Only for pure racing or pure posing though. I would not bother even if it was within my price range.

Could also be easier to bung another one on out of the packet, instead of carefully adjusting gear cables?

This is only gonna be for racers right, can only see it making things faster. And the route of technological progression was chosen for the tour and similar races a long time ago.

You wont see many 'metal' bikes there anymore!

not a new idea. just a new way of doing it. they had a fly by wire system out a few years back along with a air driven system. a few posers baught them and eventully they went out of production along with the spares. not really a viable idea for a mtn bike.

what's to discuss? it's the future. cables are soo 20th century.

If it's good enough for cars, it's good enough for bikes FFS.

It says in that article it weighs less than the manual stuff - that can't include the weight of the batteries, surely?

it's a lithium-ion (more like polymer i'd have thought) battery. i reckon that could weigh in the same as cables and outers.

I've got a mental image of the Domestique being sent back to the team vehicle to fill his jersey pockets with new batteries half way through a stage...

When I was in Whitcomb the other day the chap that I was chatting to said that the shop had been testing some Campag wireless/electonic shift gears for some time.

His view was that it was the bees knees, although I have personal reservations as he said that it was using the bluetooth protocol, which is notoriously power hungry.

Eh? Bluetooth was specifically designed for battery powered devices so is designed to minimise power consumption.

It'd be total overkill anyway, why use a fully featured short link protocol when very limited functionality is required?
