Chain Ring Teething Problems

Hey

I just had a new chain ring and chain fitted today and while riding home I was surprised how noisy the new set up was!

Im am now riding a 48T/16T with an SRAM SS Compatible 1/8 Chain (but it was pretty cheap @ £7.99).

My previous setup was ultra quiet so I'm a bit worried....

Any Ideas?

Just wants running in, most likely.

Is your chainline ok?

The chain line looks pretty sweet (and it was fitted by my LBS who is pretty good)

I'm gonna degrease it an re-lube to see if it makes a difference

Search the forum for chain maintenance threads.

Degreasing may not be the way forward.

I had an SRAM PC-1 chain and it was shocking; some links seemed to be distorted and clicked and scraped making an awful racket. As soon as I could I got decent chain and then silence.

I'd recommend KMC for a budget chain.

hmmm, I managed to destroy a KMC in about 200km, running it too tight with a slightly off centre chainring. preactically snapped it. upto the point it failed, it just got noisier and noisier.

Are you sure the noise isn't coming from the rear cog? The teeth on the cog could be worn a bit to fit your old, worn out chain.

I quite like the izumi chain, but the mid range one at £16; never had a signifigant noise issue.. running euroasia cog

my current noise issue is a combination of a newish DA cog (still not worn in the shoulders on the teeth) and a cheap KMC chain, the rollers are loose and rattle a bit.

I think the Izumi I got is the same one, just slightly cheaper at the jumble
