Cycling newbies + clothing

is it just me or do you some people lose all their common sense when they mount a cycle? I see crazy stuff like people wearing gloves when it's sunny and way to many layers.I wanna ask them what they're thinking and tell them that they're only riding to work - not going on an expedition.

I often wear gloves to protect my valuable hands

and lycra bibshorts to protect my arsehole and "gooch"

and shoes that attach to the pedals.

I don't know why I do it, WAC!

i used to wear gloves all year round but stopped after discovering that spongier bartape and bare hands was far more comfortable and less faffy. and, sorry teddy, stylier.

Gloves are the best surface I find to wipe off grease/dirt off my hands. Certainly better than getting some muck on a tshirt.

always wear gloves. always wear glasses aswell. had to many accidents not to. new gloves is alot easier than skin grafts when you come off at 20+.
and a twig hitting specks doesn't hurt anywhere near as much as one in the eye.

i also wear full kevlar body protection but then i think thats going to be common place in london soon.

I've had a set of those Altura Stringbacks for about 2 weeks and the palm/thumb joint is worn through already. Stylin' yes - hardwearing no.

A bit of hit and miss. I had the same problem on one of my pair of Altura Stringbacks but three other pairs have done me really well.

You could try contacting them and asking for a replacement pair.

2 weeks is a bit crap thouhg, +1 to what seldom killer said.

I know it's wrong, but I really covet the white rapha ones - all sniper-padding-goats-massaged-in-baby-oil-£90-worth of them.

1.Most people have no common sense anyway.
2.Gloves are generally acceptable all year round.
3.Too many layers is stupid, people don't seem to realise that cycling is exercise so you should dress for 5-7 degrees celcius warmer weather.
4.They aren't thinking at all.

Have you ever had to ask your better half, gf, wife, mother to wipe your arse because you have taken all the skin off your hands from crashing? No? Well neither have I but I wear gloves so I never have to.

All people in London wear too many clothes and all women complain about the cold when it's not cold.

Everyone should HTFU.

your avatar isn't wearing gloves. i'd just use the shower head as a dookie-hose then dry my arse on a bit of carpet dog-sliding-down-a-hill style.

she'd never know.

gloves usually unless I'm riding with gel under the bartape thingies which are tony tiger grrrreat(!) though they do make the bars look a bit odd. Always bibshorts and always long sleeve top / jersey - comin' off aint no fun in short sleeves.

I agree, many people are overdressed on bikes, but I always think to myself that this is their first week on a bike (e.g. commuting) and they'll get clevererer once they realise how much they sweat...

I wear gloves in summer, but rarely in winter
this is more to prevent hands slipping off the bars due to sweat

Ya same, in summer my hands get so damn sweaty it feels like they are going to slip off so it's gloves all year round for me.
