Free to good home: Vitus 979 frame and fork

--- No longer available, given to Rik. Hope you get on well with it man.

This is a piece of bike history that deserves a spot on my wall. Sadly 'she' disagrees. Free to anyone who wants it.

Pretty high risk to ride as of the cast aluminium lugs has a crack (and they aren't exactly easy to replace...), I'm only giving it away as a piece of decorative memorabilia.

It's in SW11, if you want it come and get it. I can take it to Vauxhall where I work if that's easier.

Looks like this without the decals and components but the anodised bits are black and the seat post is adjustable.

If no one wants it it's going to be flogged for scrap metal. And that would be sad.

Forks look 100% - they are a pretty cool design too IMO.

I can't see any way of fixing the crack - it probably wouldn't make the whole frame break as it's in one of the arms on the seat binder so not essential to the integrity - but you're going to struggle to stop the seat post moving. Frankly though, would you ride a 20 year old bike that was held together with glue?

BTW The bike in the picture isn't my frame, that's just a pic I scarfed off the net.

you give me an idea!

I could fix it with glue!

My university has a workshop where they work on sportscar chassis design. They simple use adhesive to hold it all together, Im sure I could bodge something that would work.

The alternative being, hack off the aluminium part altogether and use traditional steel lugs to repair the frame properly. Im trying to learn about frame building so that would be useful. Im not in London though, will be there in about week and a half though.

collar the lug in question and tig weld it. Compromise the look but fix the problem.

But that frame is a beauty, has to be said. Would be worth the effort.

I'll have the forks if they're going! Would definitely be a shame to see the bike as a whole die tho, so someone please save it. Lovely paint job, does it have full chrome head tube and stays?

The bike's not the one in the picture, it's black and not built up. And it doesn't have any chrome - it's fully aluminium.

TIG is a possibility but I think the heat would damage the glue that holds the frame together. It's a really oddball bike - there's no welding, the lugs and tubing are glued together. Repairing the crack is going to take time and money that I haven't got and I reckon the end result will likely be a nasty ride on the pain train. And I hate the pain train...

Which brings me back to my original question: who wants it? PM me. First to collect gets it.

Are the dropouts the same as the ones in the picture?
I would take it if it has potential for fixedness..

Potential for fixedness is limited. The dropouts are like the ones in that picture - slightly sloping but basically horizontal. Guess you could run it as an SS but you'd need a dog ugly tensioner or summit. Or you could try to find some aluminium track dropouts and practice your TIG welds...

I'm home most of tonight. By Clapham Common. If any of you want it best thing is to drop me an email and I'll send you my number. I'm on alastair underscore instone at hotmail dot com

Was down at Brixton Bikes today and had a chat with one of the fellows who knows all about these frames. He reckoned that welding it would not work.

mcbateso, that address didn't work.

As far as claiming it, the first person to collect can have it. Only take it if you want it for yourself though, grabbing it ahead of someone else so you can turn a quid on it would be weak. If you fix the crack I hope you'd do the same as I'm doing and pass it on free if you ever get rid of it.

why don't you give it to a good indepedent bike shop as a front windows advert? you know, it would be nice if a classic bike is being used as a window display.
