Taper

Got a question and wondered if anyone had any knowledge they'd like to flex.

I have a Phil BB (ISO taper I assume) and want to use old shimano 600 cranks (JIS taper?). Mr Brown says there isn't much of an issue interchanging ISO and JIS as you don't change them often. The only prob is chainline. This is the reason I want to use the phil, so I can adjust it.

SO will the Shimano taper be cool on the Phil BB?

Thanks.

JIS cranks sit 'slightly' further out on ISO BB...

(or is it the other way round)

get a jis axel from phil and replace the iso one, they are not that much.

the jis crank sits about 3-4 mil closer to frame on ISO tapered BB
the ISo crank sits about 3-4 mil further from the frame on JIS tapered BB

the problem with phil may be that when you move the chainline 3-4 mil further out on the drive side the left crank will be 3-4 mil closer to the frame possibly rubbing on the chainstay or the BB shell itself.....or maybe not....

and the cranks not gonna explode overnight.........they should be fine
but its alwasys best to use matching on matching

The problem lies in it being an 'old' shimano (JIS) crank. How worn is the spindle hole? If the JIS crank already sits further in on an ISO taper then an old crank just might bottom out with the crank bolt resting against the spindle instead of holding the crank on in tension. There's only one way to find out.
How long is the phil spindle? If you're using an old 600 crank then the ideal BB would be a shimano 107mm, I reckon a 110,112 symmetrical ISO BB would work on good condition cranks, on worn out cranks you could get away with as much as 115 but I wouldn't venture close to the 107mm mark.*

*of course with an adjustable phil this is only a guideline.

Thanks guys.
Just wondering if I should bother taking out the current cup/cone BB thats in there.
Had a look last night and the cranks do sit pretty close to the bearings on the BB possibly rendering the 'adjustment' useless.

How can you change an axle on a sealed BB crash?
