I went to Arizona last year, driving back from Grand Canyon to Phoenix and stopped in one of those giant roadside car-parks-with-eating-joints to get a McDonalds. I was impressed when I saw a bicycle parked up outside McDonalds with a bunch of camping gear bungeed to it. You don't see many bikes out there (not in the middle of nowhere, at least) so I was going to take a photo, and then I noticed the hunting rifle hanging off the handlebars and thought I'd better not in case the owner also had a pistol strapped to his hip. I guess you don't need to lock your bike if you're tooled up.

There was a thread linked to off CyclingPlus which was serious discussion amongst American roadies about whether they take a 'piece' when going on training rides.

It was quite unbeleiveable. I may google for it and edit this post if I can get over my lethargy.
