haha. you're probably gonna get a grilling for being a noob frankmg!
but i hear the flyer is good. although i'm not the most knowledgeable otp (off the peg) bikes. there's a couple of threads about it. just search for "otp" or "off the peg".

yeah... if you don't fancy doing the build yourself, you might be better off looking second hand, you'll get a lot more for your money. ask around on the forum or talk to fixed gear london.

Hi FrankMG, if you want the pleasures of an "own build", you can get a frame and then all the components yourself. However, if this seems like a bit much for a first time, there are lots of off-the-peg bikes for your money. They extend from the £350 Giant Bowery from CycleSurgery (which I recently very happily bought), to much more illustrious steeds like the Willier. They're quite a few between £350-£500, then more again to a grand or even more. Check out the link vinylvillian gave, and you'll soon be whizzing around on just one gear. By the way, the difference between single-speed and fixed does have a learning curve, so I would only recommend fixed to you if you are very confident in your bike handling skills. I'm a total wimp, so my 19 stone mashes away on single-speed, but I'm just not brave (skilled?) enough for fixed.

If you are in west london check out the Felt Dispatch which they have at SBR on the fulham road in SW6. I think they also have a Lemond Filmore.

I bought a Bowery recently (for £325 from Edwardes) and it's got a flip-flop hub, so no problem to ride fixed. I like the bike (my first fixie) a lot. It feels similar to my Cannondale road bike which was over three times the price. If you're a big guy, I'd definitely recommend it. I'm 6'7" and this bike fitted far far better than any of the others I tried in the largest frame sizes (Fuji Track, Langster, Genesis Flyer)...

I'm selling one of my old builds if you're interested? It was stolen 2 months ago and have recently retrieved it and 3 bikes is far too many for me!

FrankMG, its a good bike, and an excellent frame. I rate it very highly. I use it daily and I have no complaints at all. And as GiraffeBoy says, you just flip over to get the fixed gear. Best of both worlds.

was yours the one wer u chased down the guy and he sed hed baught it frm brick lane an asked for 180 for it bak, but thn u only paid 50 for it in the end?
+im interested - frame size?

GranseAnse2Grenville + GiraffeBoy: i had sum test rides today, and found i didnt rly like the bowery as much as the more slender frames, such as the flyer or the fuji track - they felt like they suited me more sumhow
is ther sumthing about the fram geometry/size that suits different body types? or is it purely taste orietated?

Reading these post is making my head hurt, where are the grammar police when you need them?

On the helpful note, the main thing to be looking for in geometry is top tube and seat tube length. If you have a long torso and arms then you will find longer tt should give a more comfortable ride without having to resort to a long stem. If you have long legs then frames with a long seat tube will tend to fit you better and reduce the need for long seat posts.

Also check out toe overlap, if your an inexperienced rider trying fixed for the first time a OTP track bike like the Fuji can catch you out with the toe overlap, but with experience you tend to get used to it.

i apolagise for my lazy writing style - i shall strive to be more grammer-worthy in future; especially to help someone who offers such valuable information :D

+i generaly cycle with my toes on the pedals - is toe overlap only an issue if you usually ride with your foot midway on the pedal, or is it a problem regardless?

even with correct foot position some frames have overlap (depending on the size of your feet).

it doesn't take long before you naturally adjust so that it isn't a problem.

The worst culprit for toe overlap in otps is probably the bianchi pista - i don't know of any others that have it particularly severely. The flyer/fuji track/charge plug/langster all have none/minimal toe overlap, to my knowledge.

and for those who like to mess with the grammar police, perhaps we should call it To'verlap? (you know, like toe and overlap all squished together, and my teachers said I would never amount to anything)
