Southover Sprint - Brighton Hill Climb Race June 28th

We've been talking about it over on the Brightonian Thread

Nothing official like, But there might be a race going up one of Brighton's more potent hills on june 28th

Think most of the brighton lot are in but would be great to get a few of the londong lot came down

what do people reckon?

I reckon the speed bumps would be a bit of a pain in the arse

Hmmm... do the speedbump or go for the really narrow flat bit in the gutter... either way I think i'd puke :-)

Yeah, sounds fun. I've been up Albion road at the end of a London to Brighton. I suppose Southover is similar?

I don't really have a road-going fixed at the moment though (not one that would get me to Brighton), so it'd have to be geared, plus riding down with a few people. I wouldn't bother changing gears on the hillclimb though :D

Similar to Albion Road, little bit longer.

Spin to win, will need low gearing sub 65 I think.

there's talk of switching it to the beacon, more of a challenge and without speed humps...

Sounds good to me

Sounds good here too, especially if a group was riding down; except it's the day before the rescheduled lfgss track day, and I might have to choose one or the other :(

i'm not about on the 28th unfortunately. shame - was really up for this.

how fast can you go up the beacon?? got me wondering so i did come digging - having done some reps of the hill this morning, not very fast i might add...

the fastest time i could find was clocked by Stuart Dangerfield who beat reigning hill climb champ Jeff Wright by ten seconds in a time of 3-45.2. apparently it's 1500m from car park to car park. which would make his average speed 14.9mph or 24kmh. oh, and the average power output was 487 Watts. just ridiculous!!!

the top fours riders all rode fixed wheel. here is four times national hill climb champ jim henderson's bike. 12 pounds.

FYI - when Dan Fleeman broke Gary Dodd's longstanding record at the Bec Hillclimb last year, he clocked 1.43.02, averaged 700W and put out 11W per kg of bodyweight :O

11W/kg for that sort of time is considered "World Class (e.g. International Pro)" by CyclingPeaks power meter software.

wow. that's seriously inpressive. i doubt he could hold that power over the course of the beacon - though i'd love to see him try!!

is anyone going to be able to make this date? it's right before the track day (?). so it's going to be pretty hard to convince people to make the journey. i suppose we could try and combine it with the social that's going on in brighton?

i'm not sure if combining it with the social ride is a great idea, but maybe we should reschedule?

i am definitely up for it, whenever, but am swimming in lancing 3-5 that day so would have to do it early or late. would be nice to make a day of it (given the organisation necessary and the necessary beers of celebration / commiseration) and have a few forumengers down

i reckon also i need a 21t 3/32 cog for it - is that going to be difficult to find?

I'll be doing the track day, so won't make it :(

Might be worth someone knocking up a poll for a London to Brighton/Ditchling Hillclimb preferred date, like jonny did for the Oxford ride...
