I am not getting my bike lock out untill I have the key in my hand first.

Regarding pride. I think I must be up there in the gayist bike compitition.

last time i went to brighton my friend locked himself to me and lost his key on the beach. Against all odds and in the dark we found it amongst the pebbles. He's coming with me on this ride so i guess i should get him and living asleep to meet and lock up together, aaaah.

he sounds like the perfect partner to pinkgottimobbs. never put your keys in a bowl with those two.

I went to a party once and put my keys in a bowl. I havent seen my GF since. I did get to spend a night of passion with a 58 year 15 stone old mother of 5 though. WHen I explained that the keys were for an Italian stailoin parked out side I think she was expecting a Frarri not a fixie.

Note: some or all of the above is compleat bolloxs!

What gear ratio should I use for this ride? 50/14 is probably a little extreme for me.

Currently on 48/16, and probably ought to go and buy something this weekend if I am going to come on the ride next week.

Gear ratio's are a pretty personal preference, but there are some decent hills on this ride, so I would swap down to a 48/18.

just did a reccy of this route today with my flatmates. unfortunately i can't make it next weekend but i thought i'd give a bit of opinion/advice.
route feels mostly downhill with a couple of pretty long descents. particularly just before the M25 there's a steep long one.
None of the climbs were difficult on 70GI.
I wrote out directions before the ride, we didn't get lost. if anyone would like a copy i'd be more than happy to share.
Devil's Dyke is definitely worth doing, just a short detour up to the highest point.
All in all a great ride. Have fun next week!

Route directions - second half of ride

Here's my reccy of the second half of the ride as promised. It takes the route from Turner's Hill on to Brighton via Devil's Dyke... I didn't do the first half, as there's already some directions knocking around. Distances quoted are roughly the distance between actions.

It's quite long, but the route's simple really and I figure people can just cut out the bits they don't think they'll need and print it out. Think I've uploaded a PDF if you want it.

____

Crossroads, top of Turner's Hill (heading south on B2028). Pub on left. RIGHT TURN, B2110 to HANDCROSS.

3.5 mi

Road ends. LEFT TURN on B2036 then QUICK RIGHT TURN, B2110 to HANDCROSS.

3.5 mi

Entering Handcross, LEFT TURN at roundabout.

Through village, RIGHT TURN signed B2110.

Bridge over A23, straight across mini roundabout then fairly quick, small LEFT TURN to WARNINGLID.

2.5 mi

Straight through WARNINGLID.

1.5 mi

Road forks twice, stay with obvious "main" road (that's left then right).

1 mi

Straight across A272 into WINEHAM LANE. Follow 2 mi to end.

Left turn at end.

1 mi

Right into TRUSSLER'S HILL LANE. Follow 2 mi to end.

Join main road bearing left, signposted BRIGHTON.

1 mi

Straight over roundabout signposted DEVIL'S DYKE.

1 mi

RIGHT TURN up hill, by 'Blind Summit' signs.

1 mi

Top of hill.

CAUTION RIGHT TURN where road bears left on steep downhill, just past golf club.

PUB is at the end of this road. Go the other way, straight on and over a couple of roundabouts, and you're in Brighton/Hove.

RIGHT TURN at Esso station into THE UPPER DRIVE is the quickest way to the supermarket and the seafront. Or straight on for Pride!

Nice one jonny, good to have you on board!

This is getting close now. Are all of those people on the list still coming? Is there someone in the medium pace group who knows where they are going? Does everyone know where the start is?

Just trying to get people talking...

Don't know the route we're taking, nor the start point. still game for it though.

Do you reckon the fast group will catch the middle group before the pub? Normally I'd say no chance, but there is only 5 of you, and you are all pretty quick. Perhaps a private wager?

Good effing point mate.

I'm almost certainly out of this one. Not that I would have known where I was going.

I'm actually wondering about the wisdom of having lots of different groups. Hope it works out nicely though.

Don't worry, worst case is if no one else knows the way, I'll ride with the medium pace group.
