my name is chris.. from california... i am going to be studying in sussex this summer from june 21-Aug 15... i am a member of the LA FIXED community and Orange County Bike community... i hit up midnight ridazz and wolfpack events in LA... was wondering if someone could fill me in on how i can get from sussex to the city (where i assume all the good rides are). and if someone can get me more familiar with the fixed culture over there in europe =]

i am currently riding a FETISH CYCLE "Attack" with aerospoke front and velocity deep v laced to formula in the back.. =]

where abouts in sussex will you be studying? Getting the train into london, there are pretty regular services, all taking between 45 mins and an hour, send me a PM, and i will sort you out with more details :)

Here's an aborad for you...

You probably will be going to the University of Sussex which is located outside the town of Brighton by the sea. I presume this as it's probably the only study centre in the county perhaps worth leaving LA for. If correct there is a Brighton fixed wheel group, and you could use the search link on this forum to find related posts. Brighton is just over 50 miles from London and we went on a group ride there in April. To meet forum members there are regular drinks evenings in the East, South And West of London, once a week. For other info check the 'Rides and Races' category.

Welcome to the UK, cycling scene in England is very different to "Europe" as a whole.

As for rides, depends what you mean by good, I sent my young life riding and training in the beautiful West Sussex South Downs hills and lanes.....highly recommended, though gears help there.

If you're studying at Sussex Uni, then Brighton's your nearest town. It's a nice relaxed place, and we've got our own corner of the LFGSS board here.

There's about 10 of us in and around Brighton on the board as far as I can tell. Eight of us went out for a ride last night - it's easy to get out into the country here (Brighton's not very 'urban'!), and we're gettin more sociable... Just give us a shout when you're here and come n ride with us!

As for London, it's a 50 minute train ride / 55 mile ride from Brighton...

I will be studying at the Uni of Sussex in Brighton... =] im going to be taking physics because apparently when the units transfer, the summer in Sussex equals an entire year of physics and physics lab back here... SWEETNESS!!! i am a biological sciences major from the university of california, irvine with plans of dental school...

I cannot wait to meet the brighton crew! i will mos def let you all know when i arrive so we can go on some rides!!!

Brighton is ace. You'll love it. Massive off-road community there so get a mountain bike (ss of course).

ya.. im coming as part of the ISS program... alot of people come frm my school because sussex is known to give easy A's to us... =] plus the partying and girls make it even better!!! i think there is a total of 140 of us going... some through UCI and people like me who have applied directly to sussex through ISS...

Hello Chris, there'll be a few london2brighton rides, i'm sure.

Also, there is a cycle track on the road from Brighton to London, dicki and I cycled on it last year. It's about 30% off road, 20% on road, 50% non existent. Would take about 3 hours to ride to London.

how does riding work in UK... are their any rules or regulations that i should know of... so that i can break them .. like i do here!!! are there bike lanes???

Non existent as in, there is no cycle track, you have to share the road with cars.

Riding works quite well in the UK. Hopefully we'll have a decent summer, so it won't rain every other day whilst you're over here. Be careful when running red lights, you might get a) fined £30 or b)run over.
