My new seat post - 360° electroluminescent light, it turned out brighter than I thought and bluer than I thought (it was meant to be white). I am quite surprised just how bright it is in moderate light.

Some pictures with the thing switched off - kind of looks pale pink when switched off, some with it switched on with the room lights on, then with the room lights dimmed and one in total darkness.

It's not quite finished as I am making a smaller inverter/power source based on those little 3V button batteries so I can shove it down the seat post - at the moment I am driving it from the 6V that I get from the little inverter which you can see on the saddle (which does just about fit under the saddle).

that's simply brilliant, biggest concern is how strong is it to support a whole weight?

secondly, would it be possible to dim the brightness a bit simply by using a smaller voltage battery (thus smaller) and some adjustment to dimmer it?

No problemo, it is a very strong alloy seatpost (Thomson) the kind large muscley mountain bikers jump over logs and fly down mountains on.

It is only the very surface of the post that emits light (around 0.42mm).

Yes, the brightness is reliant on the input voltage and the area of the surface you are illuminating - but I don't mind it being so bright, I was just pointing out that I was surprised just how bright it turned out, not complaining.

And yes a dimmer would work also, the inverter I am using has a switch to make it flash on and off and a small dial to control the speed of the flash, you can take it right up to about 80hz, it looks surreal when it is at full pelt, but I suspect any epileptic cyclists or car drivers behind you might not like that !!! :)

That was my initial idea !! Front half white, rear half red.

It is a simple case of applying some red gel.

Let's try photobucket . . . .

We had a guy come in and show us all his electroluminescent wares for show stands and advertising.
I started thinking along bike lines (as usual) too. Think this could add up to some interesting development in the bike world.

The only thing I remember with the stuff he showed was that it made a noise depending on brightness.
Great work though.

Cheers, yes it will give off a high pitched noise, but it is fairly quiet, you have to stick your ear to it to hear it.

Yeah. I remember him linking to that Surelight site above when people were asking what the hell he was doing.

He said they some tiny power packs for him so he could embed in the sole.

Minus the batteries the whole shooting match weighs 63g - the batteries (4 x AAA) weigh 46g

Soooooo, bear with me... It's a thin film of material wrapped around your seat post that's then plugged into a battery which causes it to luminesce? That's all it takes to make it work? A-ma-zing...
Could you apply that to a whole frame? *shudders* :o

Thems the basics, you need to invert the power (from batteries) from DC to AC and you need to seal all the edges you cut so you don't keep zapping yourself - but that's about it - go now and make your own my child.

Hmmm not sure, you do need to lay down five layers - two conducting layers and three insulating layers. Might be possible (?)

My (in need or repair) bike bag is already strew with electroluminescent wire, I think the wire would be a better option for Scotttt, as you can sew it in as a trim, you can even get it as a wire with a lip running along it specifically to be sewn into material.

The problem is (and similarly to suggestions of patenting) is that it is an existing technology that I am just applying to a seatpost, kind of like covering your barge with light bulbs - you can neither patent barges nor light bulbs as they are existing technologies and I don't think the application is novel enough.
