Help me spend around £800

My work has just joined the Cycelscheme so I now have the ability to get a new bike with a good discount. I currently ride a 2nd hand fixed On One Pompino (XL frame), but want to get something shiny and new.

I have spoken to BLB about them putting a custom bike together for me as they are part of the scheme.

So here is the Friday afternoon task. If you had around £800 to spend on a new bike what would you get?

I have put down my current thoughts. I am looking for bike that I will be able to use everyday as I ride to work.

Frame - Maybe a Bob Jackson
Front Wheel - Arrospok - no one has one in Newcastle yet - I want to be the first.
Rear Wheel - Velocity Deep V on a Suzue carbon hub
Cranks - ?
Tyres - ?
Handlebars - 24 San Ku Kai Bars or, NITTO B201 AA aluminium riser bar
Stem - NITTO NJ PRO AA aluminium NJS Keirin stem or alike
Grips - Oury
Saddle - San Marco Rolls
Seatpost - ?

Does anyone know of any other good shops who are part of the cyclescheme that would build something up for me?

Cheers

Maybe I worded the post badly. I was meaning not-off the peg. What custom would you build up?

Depends on the shop innit. Some cyclescheme places will allow you to build one up with parts (predominantly) bought from their shop.

being honest, i don't think BLB will build a custom for under £800, especially with that spec. i know the cyclescheme might help, but i don't know how much. if i was you, living in newcastle, i'd speak to bob jackson, about building you a bob jackson, rather than BLB about building you a bob jackson.

You won't a Jackson built up with anywhere near that spec for £800.

BLB will shaft you good and proper, £800'll probably just about cover the frame, 'Spok and Ourys...

sorry about all the sarcastic twoddle! my advice would be to forget about the arrospok, they ain't that great. unless you really love the look of them and stuff, in which case definitely get one.

Putney Cycles will do you a complete Bob for £850 I think. Stronglight ST1000 cranks, open pros, rest of the kit good but nothing too bling bling.

Sorry to be a grinch, but do you have somewhere secure to keep it at work? Because if you build it up like that, I can see you riding it for about a week before someone twocks it. That, or you'll end up with an £800 coat rack in the hall while you carry on riding the Pompino to work.

I dunno, do whatever makes you happy but try not to have eyes bigger than your wallet, if you'll excuse the mangled metaphor. Bikes are for riding first and foremost, not for looking at...

Edit - to be more constructive, how about you get something lower key but with better quality parts? Like, get a BJ with some nice hubs on CXP33 rims, then whatever bars and grips/tape floats your boat.

What is it about Oury grips, anyway? They were popular in the States because they're common BMX grips there, why are they suddenly the sine qua non of a fixed wheel bike here?

...also - velocity deep v on a suzue carbon hub?? why?

velocity deep v = very heavy, carbon hub = very light.

Also exceptionally expensive. considering half your budget (more or less) will be taken up by the frame, and another 200 (at least) by the arrospok, that leaves 200 for everything else...
