CHICAGO -- Tyler Fabeck, 22, was killed early Sunday on his bicycle when he was struck by a car in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Near Northwest Side.

Police are urge city cyclists to use caution as the weather gets warmer and more bicycles are on the streets.

The incident happened about 1:15 a.m. in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard, when Fabeck made a left-hand turn in front of a car near Western Avenue, a Shakespeare District police captain said.

Witnesses told police that the bike “came out of nowhere” and attempted to "beat the light," turning left on a yellow light in front of a Toyota Prius.

Fabeck, of 7950 N. Mozart St, was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 1:46 a.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner said.

The driver of the vehicle was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, but police stressed the importance of cyclists following traffic signals and wearing proper safety gear. Fabeck was not wearing a helmet when he was struck. Head injuries are believed to be the cause of his death, police said. An autopsy is under way

The captain said this was their first cycling fatality of the season. Officers are being urged to stop cyclists who are violating traffic laws.

"I told roll call, 'If you see a bicyclist violating a law, stop them,'" he said, "It can save their life."
Chifg.com lit up of course. It's just sad to hear. He was a member on that site. So that's the 2nd death of a forum member in a cycling accident in recent time.

it does suck that he died, but it is possible for victims to be at fault.

impossible to know whose fault it was, but i guess it just reinforces the point that you have to be super careful when riding.

Like you wouldn't believe. Recent story from SF:

Last night one of my friends was riding his bike when he was hit by an sfpd officer on a motorcycle. my friend is okay, his bike is not. the officer was aggressive and nasty to him (accusing him of running a red - he didn't, riding without a helmet - he was clearly wearing one, riding without lights - they were on, and intentionally hitting him - wtf?)

Another sorry tale:

A rookie Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy whose patrol car swerved into a group of cyclists on a training ride, killing two of them, had been charged seven years ago with drunk driving and speeding.

James Council, 27, had two drunken-driving charges dismissed by the Los Angeles city attorney's office in a 2001 plea deal during his arraignment process, Deputy City Attorney Larry Shelley told the San Francisco Chronicle. Council did plead guilty to engaging in a speed exhibition and was sentenced to 24 months of probation and fined him $713.

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the circumstances surrounding Sunday morning's fatal accident in the Cupertino foothills.Council was on routine patrol going northbound on winding Steven's Canyon Road when he swerved across the double-yellow center dividing line into a southbound group of cyclists.

Deputy Council has since been charged with a misdemeanour traffic offence.

All that said, I think it is fair to point out in this tragic case that a helmet could very well have saved this poor man's life.

I have a friend that was hit by a car last year - the driver was texting, ran a stop light at about 25mph (this was all verified by the driver herself to bystanders on the scene, although she's now trying to deny it in court) and hit him square on. He was thrown about 15 feet into the air, and came down straight onto the top of his head. His helmet disintegrated and he broke his neck in seven places. He was in a halo for six months, but is now up, active and riding again, with only a little soreness and a lot more fear of traffic to show for it. If he hadn't been wearing a helmet, I dread to think what would have happened.

Please be careful, everyone. I may not have met the majority of you, but I'd hate to be reading about any of you in this respect.

My thoughts are with Mr Fabeck's family.
