It may not be to scale but it's topologically correct. It shows how stations are interconnected and for that you don't need scale. It does what it says on the tin. It's fit for purpose. That's why the design has hardly changed in such a long time. The problem begins when people assume it is to scale and think they can use it to navigate overground.
