Phil BB question

I'm looking to get a new bottom bracket and at the minute looking towards Phil to go with my Phil rear hub (120mm). At the minute I have a miche primato 107mm BB. As I'm building the bike up now I have never used the miche BB with the phils.

I question I wanna ask is, will a 113mm JIS Phil BB fit my Bob Jackson Vigorelli BB shell and will I get a decent chainline? How the hell do I work it out?

Thanks! (Oh, I'm new)

D.

If you look in that database then you'll be able to find appropriate cranks.

103mm (JIS) Phil would work with a Sugino messenger.

Most other entries on the database don't let you know the size of the bb.

Remember that with the Phil Wood BB you need to factor in the cost of the cups and also the cost of the tool to put it in with, though you could probably borrow this from a forumenger.

Decide on the cranks first as that'll influence whether you need an ISO or JIS taper on the BB.

Phils have two adjustable cups by the way so you can shift the BB either direction by 4mm.

If it helps I'm running symmetrical 110.5 ISO taper (Phil call them campagnolo) with Sugino 75 cranks.
My rear hub is 120 Phil with an EAI superstar cog.

Cheers, would the phil work with Sugino 75?

Provided you buy the "campagnolo" tapered BB yes.

Oh, and my rear cog is Phil too — 1/8" 17T

Not sure how that affects things?

That'll be fine. The shoulder profiles on the Phil cogs are pretty much the same as the EAI - i.e. fat.

phil wood basically makes any type of threading and taper and length you can think of so you just need to order the right one.

AFAIK sugino 75's go with a 108mm JIS Phil

Sugino 75s are ISO.
The rest of Sugino's range are JIS

yes, that's what i've always thought, but seems that sugino 75's are a bit weird... basically if i get 75's i'll get the matching BB. i wouldn't care if it's unsealed.

see this:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=290531

think someone on this forum has the same setup too. JIS phil with 75's.

dogsballs as i know uses campag 111mm

As stated above I use sugino75 with phil ISO 110.5 and the chainline is perfect.
You can fit JIS cranks to an ISO BB and vice versa but they sit differently so need a different length.

ISO cranks, like the 75s on a JIS BB would need the BB to be shorter to allow correct chainline.

depends what the rear hub is well, 111 is for goldtec and EAI cog which sit out a tad than normal (43mm ish)

Sorry I should point out all of the above is based on using a Phil Wood hub as specified by DavidMc

Thanks guys? Would be easier achieving that perfect chainline with a Sugino standard BB. There's a 109mm on outspoken cycles for under 40 quid.

67.09% of you seem to think this is a good option so I might go for that.

It leaves me with a Sugino 75 BB and crank with Phil rear hub and cog.

if you're a hipster who only rides on sunny days, then sugino will be fine. but for commuter or wet, just be aware of maintainance ;)

ah sorry, forgot we're talking about phil hubs.
i dont own a phil hub, don't know what's the case with the chainline there.

i really don't think unsealed bottom brackets are a big deal and i ride in the rain all the time. unless you want to go offroad with it. i've had an old hack bike with one that hasn't been overhauled for years it still runs smooth until the day i stripped the bike. although i must say if you can afford a phil BB by all means go for it it's truly fit and forget.
