Singlespeed Conversion, Help Needed Please

Guys,
could you help me please? I have an old 70s Bianchi racer that I would like to convert to singlespeed. I would like to retain as much of the original bike as poss. Can I get a conversion kit that would fit onto the freehub thats on the bike now? At the moment there is a 5 speed one on there but I would like to keep the old 27x11/4 wheel if poss. Also what number tooth rear ring would you recommend? Thanks in advance :-)

you can screw on a freewheel in place of the freehub cassete, I'd expect.

but the wheel would need re-dishing.

you could ghetto speed it, leave all the cogs and chose one that gives a straight chain line.

not a bad idea, but they do have a tendency to skip, unless you run the chain tight

he wants to keep it original, would allow him to put the gears back on, possibly kill less puppies, but i make no promises

Redishing centres the rim over the hub.

Its either get a conversion kit for the cassette hub .................... very easy to do

Or................ Remove the sprocket block
Replace the block with a 1/8th or 3/32 freewheel 16-17-18-19-T
....................Respace to align with the chainring
& then ..................Redish

Never ask RPM to do a wheel for you, not if he believes a cassette hub can be replaced with a screw on freewheel

Is it a screw on sprocket block??

its unusual to see 5 speed cassettes

I am very rarely rude or offensive but you are.... frequently.
If you are going to give advice to a newbie try to use the correct terms to describe the parts of the wheel/bike he will need to research about before he converts, otherwise he will waste a lot of time and effort before he realises you are in fact talking out of your arse. Now run along and check out the captains web site bicycle glossary again and again until you get it right

Mate, shut up.

First of all, how do you know he's a 'newbie'? He's might have been riding a bike a hell of a lot longer than you for all you know. You talk about not being rude.

Second of all, re-read the man's post. All he says is that he has a freehub, and it has a 5-speed cassette on it. How do you know it's not a screw-on cassette?

Also, of course you wouldn't add spacers and redish.

You're blatantly trying to start an argument here.

No I am not trying to start an argument
and I was not rude !!

"Newbie" as in new to the forum and new to converting a bike

I stand totally with RPM being incorrect in his advice and description

You obviously know your stuff so when was the last time you saw a 5 speed "FREEHUB" because my friend they are like rocking horse shit

Well, we're only going on what he says. Yeah they may be rare, but it's what he says he has.

However this is really arguing semantics. i'd recommend that he just takes the derailleur off and runs the best combination of chainring/sprocket that gives him the best chainline.

What I find hard to understand is the speed with which you and others will try to belittle anyone who doesn't bow to your point of view or agree wholeheartedly with any ridiculous and arrogant statement you want to make

I wanted the original poster to have a chance to confirm what he did in fact have on his rear wheel, no malice in what I posted at all ........... it is a common mistake to make, to wrongly call a sprocket block a cassette or freehub. What I said about RPM was meant in fun ........ really meant in fun only
You just had to join in and start trouble based on what ??? your vast experience in bike building and maintenance ???

In future please try not too be too clever and consider for a minute that not everyone who posts here has been riding for years, knows a crank extractor from a cup removing tool or a two pin freewheel tool from a headset spanner. They just might need to be led by the hand for a little while.

this thread made me laugh. hacked if you have not seen a 5 speed screw on cassette how many old bikes have you worked on? used to see them all the time at the bike collective i worked at, and any shop mechanic will back up that they exist and are seen on older 10 speed racers. RPM is a rude cunt, but he knows his shit, and is actually funny and right. ASM may be an artsy type, but he is right too, and funnier then you. you lose.

@P!MP, welcome to the forum, don't listen to Hacked, and keep your fingers away from RPMs mouth, he bites, other then that you will be fine.
