Anonymous posters are not so safe

It appears that posting anonymous comments on the web can affect your bank balance

Representing Mr Walls, Hugh Tomlinson QC said Dads Place was responsible for the publication of a "seriously defamatory, abusive and scurrilous anonymous website" over a two year period until July 2006.

In July 2006, John Baines, the main administrator of the website, also admitted his involvement and being employed by Mr Finn.

You're not anonymous. Your IP is logged here, and most ISP's retain their records for a very long time, and in addition to that your IP is generally quite static. People shouldn't think that they are anonymous on the internet just because you're using an alias and others don't know your real name.

It's not as effective as you might think. If you use the site often enough you only have to slip up once or if it's an alias have a similarity in the two users (even a subtle one) and the whole thing just crashes in and reveals who you are. Best just not to be a prick online I find. That said, I also have the tendency to be a prick offline as I can lack tact at times... so ah well.
