I think we're stuck with 'fixies' - better get used to it! At least he went on to call them 'fixed wheel' rather than
'fixed gear' bikes. If I could change two words it would be change 'have to' to 'can' as in 'use your legs to brake'.

i thought it was ok, nothing they said wasnt true, and they were some of the first to use track specific fixed wheel bikes on the road, didnt most beofre just convert their road bike with a new back wheel or use track/path bikes with a lot more relaxed geometry. and that stuff about the components, well its not exactly untrue. what does the bike snob say?

Both Winston & I are Oxbridge drop outs.

It didn't look as bad as I had expected, some misquotes but he accepted that 'fixed gear' is an americanism and used 'fixed wheel'.

Actually there is a Rolla plug, on the back of your T-shirt when you crash into the camera.

Good work on getting him to say Fixed Wheel.

I haven't seen it yet...as I'm on a train..but can't wait to see my beloved Veto on the box...but hoping they cut all my lame tricks....

We figured the piece was gonna get made anyway and in light of the recent negative media exposure it would be better to "attempt" to have some sort of control.....we told him we weren't prepared to talk about "brakeless", alley-cats or any other stuff that might be detrimental....we're happy to come across as nerds......we are..... and we tried to talk about the subject based on our experience....we also tried to mention the many different facets such as polo and trixie chix and the fact that it's no longer a curryer domain and it's great to see so many people on fixed bikes.

Mike was a really nice bloke and very keen on cycling and loved trying out my Veto...he was keen to portray the fact the transmision acts as brake and filmed a section explaining this....

We coached Mike on the use of the phrase "fixed wheel" and he did start saying it in many of the takes...however I guess these were not the best for tv purposes and got edited out.

Like I said haven't seen it yet but as it was gonna get made anyway....figured it might be better to have us old fogies rather than someone talking about brakeless and illegal street races which might have happened.....

So no Rollapaluza plug eh?....oh well.

So the producer said "anyone got any ideas on what we can use to fill a 2 minute slot?"

So someone says "how about a piece on the latest craze to hit London? Fixies."

There's not a lot you can do in two minutes. But with the time restraints I thought it came across Ok.

My 2p.

Words of Wisdom

My brother calls me to tell me fixed wheel stuff was on the BBC.

Me: "You've tried my fixed, do fancy giving it a go?"
Him: "No, I don't get it, its archaic. It's like going down to the river to wash your clothes"
Me: "I don't live near a river"
Him: "Exactly!"

there was also a slot later on (the one show, I hate it) which detailed cycling in the capital.

it was all reasonable and positive, I don't think there's anything to grizzle about, apart from maybe Winston shoving his bum in the camera

What a bunch of bollocks I was riding a fixed wheel bike in London in 1998 (and in Cambridge 2 years before that...) does that make me one of the first people? No because there were guys riding them in London in 1898 for fuck sake.
Someone better start making Fixed is not a crime stickers.....

Winston's skin turns green, his bulging muscles rip through his white shirt and grey trousers...he attempts to mutter "you wouldn't like me when I'm"....before collapsing to the floor ....upon recovery he teledials Zack Speedfast who's cool hand immediately despatches an icbm to deal with RPM in the manner which he deserves.....Kaboom.
