| | So, like, where the cable should go for the rear brake? As in it should have a rear brake? Just like there's that thing sticking out from the seat-tube where the front derailleur should go? Oh, and there's that thing hanging off the rear drop-out where the rear derailleur should go? |

You know what? This whole "a racing bike shouldn't be a fixed gear" thing pisses me of. A track bike shouldn't be on the streets, so hey presto, no one can ride fixed gear on the streets. So are you telling me all cyclists who train with fixed gears (on their road bikes) during the winter are commiting crimes against your rules of 'proper use'? Now I know why Frank VDB tried to commit suicide! But again, if you feel so strongly about it, buy the frame off me and build it up the way it 'should' be. Until then, I'm going to ride it in all its fixed gear colour-matched glory and pretend it's the official bike of the White Stripes. ;) And you know what? The front brake's a Shimano! Oooooh, the Blasphemy!

| | That's not what tramps is saying. There's just an appreciation for the purity and history of a frame. Hence why people buy NOS stuff and build a bike faithfully to a specific time, and why people try and stick only NJS stuff on a Keirin frame. There's a lot of love for a real pedigree road bike too. Just like when people see a Keirin frame built up with US components (Phil hubs for examples) and then protest at the perceived sullying of such a pure thoroughbred, there will always be people who look at a gorgeous road frame (and we only feel this way because your frame is gorgeous) and in admiration wonder why it's not the original beast it was born to be (yes, born to be because it's a custom pedigree racing bike built for that purpose). No-one is saying don't ride it. And no-one is saying it's inappropriate to do it. Hell most of my bikes are mongrels of multi-nationality and ages... but there is always going to be a love for the original purity of a machine, and if you're lucky enough to have a frame worthy of that love, you're also going to be lucky enough to have people lust over what they think it might once have been. |

| | I don't hate that bike at all! They're lovely frames and I bet it's a great ride. It's awash with sweet components. I'd probably would take the opportunity to stick a gears back on at some point though. ;) Between this and the 'bike porn' thread we have 'DOs & DON'Ts' of bikes. All fun... so long as people don't get confused and think it matters very much. |

I doubt there is any bike you could build up that wouldn't fall foul of the numerous and tedious Do's and Dont's around these parts. Risers on a track frame - Are you fucking mad you have ruined that frame, it should have drops. Ok lets change to drops - Drops on that frame riding around London, do you even ever use the drops ? Yes I use the drops - Well by rights that machine should be on the track, you do ride it on the track don't you? Er, no, I don't - That's a fucking shame, that is such a waste. Etc etc.
