I finally got around to doing London - Cambridge yesterday, which I have been wanting to do since last summer. It was a beautiful day and a brilliant ride. I was pretty knackered by the time I pulled into Cambridge station, with some pretty significant knee pain that has cleared up with a hot bath and a night's sleep.

I was riding 48 x 19 which comes out at just short of 19 thousand complete pedal strokes.I feel really chuffed to have done it and wanted to share with you guys :-)

Here's the maps of my route (it adds up to 97.5km, but I reckon that taking curves on the road, as opposed to the straightlines on the map will add up to that elusive 2.5k. And I had to ride home from the station..) Map1, Map2 when the pedometer app ran out of new points to add!

What now worries me is that the Dunwich is twice as far. Oh shit.

No hills to Cambridge either. :-)

Actually the drag into Epping sucked and there was one by Wendon's Ambo that was a bit of a surprise. But no bother to the power of the fixed wheel. Maybe.

Actually, that's a good point. Since the Eart is not spherical, it bulges at the equator, then hill climbing should be easier the further North you go (in the Northern hemisphere.)

Tour of Iceland, anyone?

One small aside, mashton.

Any reason you can't quote the distance in miles?

Even if it's just for the Old Folk....

I was hoping that people wouldn't ask the time. ;-)

In total it was 6 hours from home to Cambridge station, with a 45 minute lunch break and about 45 minutes of other stops for directions, waiting for friends (who joined me at Bishop's Stortford) to catch up, that kind of thing.

@ Kowalski, yup it was 62 miles.

Quite a dismal average speed, really.

Hi mikec,

Not organized in any sense, I've been meaning to do it for ages. When a mate from Cambridge rang on sunday morning, asking if I wanted to meet at Bishop's Stortford train station and then ride to Cambridge, I said "Yes, but I'll ride to Stortford from home in London first."

I think that a lot of people on here would fancy the ride, so get organising :-) Although, last summer hippy and I tried to do exactly that and got a whole host of no shows...

6 hours isn't too bad considering stopping, faffing and breaks etc.

Would be up for doing this actually, especially as it's flat!

@ hippy, yes I am definitely up for doing it again, but am pretty busy for the next few weekends. Maybe we'll do it in the spring proper? Notwithstanding the pain. I may have to think about changing my pedals to ones with more float, I have quite a turn out on my ankles and think that might be causing the knee issues.

I do quite fancy dong it geared and seeing what the difference is like. But that will have to wait until this year's cycle to work scheme kicks in:-)

Ahem, it's more like 14mph when you factor in stops.

And, I'd fucking LOVE to see you run over 60 miles. The only people I know who can do that are Gurkhas. Tori did Trailwalkers this year, a 100km non stop walk. her time was about 23 hours. The Gurkhas ran the thing and did it in sub 10 hours. Mentalists.

just realised i read Cambridge as Brighton, silly me.

mashton, i reckon when we did the cambridge ride back in nov we took just as long so don't worry about it.

you are right though there are no hills. that drag through epping is as bad as it gets. and dunwich is similarly flat. honest ;)

I did wonder why you thought someone may have been killed!

The annoying thing about the Epping drag is that, with the trees, it looks flat. It just felt like I had lost all energy for no good reason. A Faux Plats?
