Hi ,Could someone please tell me if you remove a 5 speed rear cassett . can you just screw on a freewheel rear single speed cog and a single crank and it will work ok?

Chain line will probably be off, usually it's best to swap a spacer over from drive side to non-drive side and re-dish the wheel.

By saying Cassette do you mean it's on a Freehub Body?

If so, maybe you should just use a single-speed conversion kit or use spacers to put on to the Freehub.
Spacers are easier, to get the chainline correct.

He said 5-speed; there are no 5-speed cassettes. He also used the term 'block', the old fashioned term for a srew-on multiple freewheel.
