Best clincher or tubular clincher for track racing (herne hill)

Hi,

What tyres are best for the track, i have mavic open pro's, so tubulars are not an option, however has anyone used tubular clinchers? they are tubulars which do not require glue and fit on clincher rims.
I have tight clearences, so for example my gp4000's are a little too tight for the forks(however they are pretty large for 23mm tyres).

The Ultremo R has been recommended but i wandered if anyone had any other suggestions, i am considering using 20mm tyres.

thanks in advance.

I used to have a tubular clincher 23mm and the difference is not noticable at all. But I dont know how they would perform on track though.

Don't bother for tubs except for those special occasions. I use continental supersonic clinchers, and think they're quite nice - but that's just my opinion.

No point closing this thread, there's still 4 months until anyone will be riding the track again!

Tubular clinchers - the worst of both worlds.

Veloflex clinchers with latex tubes give a ride as close to tubs as you'll get without going the whole hog.

I run Michelin Pro Race on my track bike but that was mainly because that's what I had when I switched from tubs to clinchers. They are fine. Unless you plan on riding indoor tracks I'd go for a decent road race tyre, as they should offer enough grip for the banking at HH and be hard wearing enough to cope with the, ahem, irregular surface.

i have heard these are the closest clincher tyre to the tub ride quality, and they are very light tyres too.

definetly worth a try

Michelin pro race are actually pretty good on the HH surface and most other outdoor (non-wood) tracks, pumped up to their full pressure, or a bit more...can you still get the 20mm version?...if so, do.

Only problem with Michelin tyres is I don't believe they're too welcome at some of the indoor tracks

After having used tubs for my first 'proper' season at HH I would say don't bother. They are way too much hassle for training and general racing. I will be purchasing a pair of clinchers for next season and keep my tubs for indoor and special occasions only

great tyres but no puncture resistance so only good for rack and clean roads (if they exist)

Same as andy, I used some spare pro race 2's I had at HH this year, they were fine.

Cheers, i was already watching those, picture shows 7-8 bar, online spec says 7-10 bar hmmm....

Regarding the tufo tubular clincher, the reviews are pretty good, and you can pump them up to 220 psi. will look into them.

any road clincher is fine for herne hill, don't bother with anything too expensive as you'll get punctures if they are too thin.

having said that, vittoria diamante pro lite 23c are the best track clincher bar none, with the added bonus of being excellent indoors too (good enough for team GB) but they are pricey.

no point in going under 22c, your not likely to be pursuiting and the HH surface is rough and bumpy these days

Rob, could we move this into the trackies sub-forum as it may be a good resource when it comes to choosing tires

Tufo Tyres are very expensive at some retailers and loads cheaper elsewhere. Shop around if curious/interested.

Stop being picky...you mis-spelt superfluous earlier today!

HH may be slightly rougher than it used to be...but it"s still smoother than any road and most other UK outdoor tracks...19mm tubs and 20mm clinchers are fine.

I raced with specialized armadillo's for half the season last year, didn't notice much or do any better/worse when I changed to some posher vittoria's. I'd say go for the highest pressure you can, and train like fuck.
