We need to pack some longer rides into the first part of the year to see if my knee can realistically take it.
Have you tried strapping it up and riding? One of those knee braces you see runners with?

I've got a hinged knee brace that works a treat for day-to-day around London cycling and also for climbing.
It just gets really restrictive after a while so anything over 45-50 miles is a ain in the ass.

I've got an appointment with a different physio though as I just didn't trust the opinion of the last on e I saw.

It's me though, I'll be fine. I am getting a brake compatible wheel for the next long ride though. And some handlebars that could fit a brake lever. Honest.

Any westerners fancy a feeder ride from Richmond Park? Or would that just be silly seeing as it would add another 15 or so miles?

Brakes are good Object, really! :)
If I've got sore knees from lots of kays or whatever I'm always on the brakes. There's no shame in trying to make your legs work for a few more years!
What sort of bars do you have that don't fit a lever? Really cut down ones?

Is your physio a sports one? One who knows a bit about cycling? It makes a difference not having some guy who only ever looks at footballer's hamstrings..

Someone mentioned to me Ibuprofen gel but I'm not keen on that stuff personally. Pain is your body telling you something ain't right. You shouldn't need to bathe yourself in painkillers.. that's for the weekends! :)

For Dunwich? Bit early to be planning feeder rides innit? I rode in to Hackney from Ealing last time. I'd not go to RP but might meet somewhere in the middle.

Question: is it too early to start a list?

You've seen the ridiculous width of my bars, I barely have room for the grips let alone a brake lever. I fancy a shift to some drops for longer distances anyway, make the climbing easier :]
I'm a non-believer in Pain Killers too, they work but I adhere to the if it's hurting there's likely a reason policy.

I've asked for a sports physio but it's NHS so may take a while. If I've heard nothing by April I'll go looking for a private one.

Yeah, I thought so.. for some reason I was thinking of diameter not width.. then it dawned about the width :)
Defo hunt down a good one (search roadie forums for doc recommendations) if you're not happy with NHS service.
It's a small price to pay now for your long-term mobility!

Did the forum guys who did it last year stick together (IE at the slowest pace) or head off at their own speeds?

we all pretty much set-off together but invariably on such a large/long ride breakaway groups happen.
I was pretty much on my own for about 20 miles at one stage but it's cool coz you meet plenty of people along the way.

Own speed but in bunches, so a couple of guys were fast and stuck together, a couple where less fast and stuck together, etc.
You eyeball everyone at the start and remember what they're wearing so you can spot 'em later on.
Kinda regrouped at the feed point a bit too (well, we were there for what? 3 hours?!)

And if I really need a brake, then that means riding on the multicoloured beast, not the comfy, sexy red one.

Are you in town yet?
I'm half-fancying a cheeky half before I head off North…
I am not sure I followed Scott.
I followed a retard who managed to get us lost with a gps navigation device thing.

No idea at the moment. I'm doing the Australia day night road this Saturday so not really up for it on Sunday morning - but will be on Sunday's after.

Are you on the night ride? If so, make sure you say hello - I'll be on a black and white condor and wearing a helmet. (yes, I am a wanker ;-) )

I'm going to start training doing laps of richmond park first.

because if I blow or get a mechanical, it's only 5 miles back home.

don't fancy being stuck out in kent, at 5pm on a sunday evening, hungry, in the dark, in the rain, surrounded by men with beards and no way to escape

In all seriousness, I *am* gonna do this.

That said, I haven't cleared this mileage since I was nineteen.

That'll be 22 years.

Proper advice on what I'll need to carry appreciated, but the biggie has to be:

What do I do if I bonk?

Don't bonk.
Which means - carry enough food for the ride in the first place.
How much? Well you will find out by doing training rides what you require for a certain distances. Multiply this out for 200k, add in extra for contingencies and Bob's your father's brother.

Warm clothes - riding clothes plus rain jacket, gloves, etc (you will know more on the night w/ forecast), tools/minitool, tubes, cash, card. Same as any long ride.
Basically, there's loads of riders that will help you out.. but you don't want to rely on them helping you out. Also, like I said, read the DD FAQ.. gone on.. read it.. now.. stop posting and read it.. DO IT.. now.. close this browser window and google it.. clooose it.. clooooooooooose it..

Not all people from Kent have beards. Admitidly most women do, but not all men.

Really wanted to do this last year but couldn't as we arranged my son's christening for the Sunday. I'm so fecking glad I didn't ride it!! From memory the Sunday was a lovely sunny day :o)

There is an article in cycling plus last week on working out your calerific need per day and per hour depending on your activity. Are you coming to the ride tonight? If so I could bring it along for you so you can work it all out hten work out how much food you will need roughly, then bring a bit more just incase;)

There's going to be a lot of people turning up carrying a lot of kit this year, which they'll then not need because it'll be lovely and warm and dry the entire way*

*Or at least that's what I keep telling myself - there has to be a reward for what we endured last year.

I'm doing it on a geared bike with mudguards and a big old saddlebag. I don't care what I look like, I'll be prepared for whatever the weather can throw at me...
