I live in San Francisco - which has a couple of small, gentle hills - and most people (myself included) swear by 46x17.

i only ask because the tour has serious issues with stages finishing in marseilles because of the mistral winds that occur in the area!

The wind has, on occasion, pushed me about two yards backwards as I stood up to start pedalling away from a stoplight. It has also made pedalling down a pretty steep hill difficult.

It's the same with any coastal town, but I suppose amplified slightly by the fact that we are the first port of call for any wind blowing in from the Pacific Ocean.

Isn't the city itself pretty flat? Outside of it though, things are a little bit hillier. Like the arse end of the Alps.

Good call. I don't really like to give advice on matters that come down so much to personal preference, like gear ratios, saddles, bars etc. etc. - I can only tell you what works for me.

Marseille itself is undergoing a serious regeneration right now, so you might be pleasantly surprised by how un-cesspool-esque it's becoming.

Well, if you didn't get robbed whilst you were there, then it's better than it was five years ago.
