| | This poor guy just logged in to report his brand new bike was stolen 'Stolen Lemond Fillmore' So in the interest of bolting the barndoor after the horse has bolted what is the best bike lock I have an ABUS d-lock for motorcycles http://www.abus.de/us/main.asp?ScreenLang=us&sid=18641299016243620052007 194311815&select=0104b01&artikel=4003318229756 Bloody thing weighs more than the bike itself Then I have one of these http://www.abus.de/us/main.asp?ScreenLang=us&sid=18641299016243620052007 194311815&select=0104b11&artikel=4003318335679 Handy but I don't know how strong it is also someone knocked my bike down and this lock scratched the paint on my tope tube and then I have one similiar to this http://www.kryptonitelock.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?cid=1001&scid=1002&pid=1170 which I use everywhere because it is heavy duty and I can carry it easily on my hips |

| | u locks are the best. cycling plus had a review last month on locks - the only lock that lasted more than 10 minutes of attack was the kryptonite new york 3000 - i've got it and it looks bloody solid. the kryptonite new york chain was broken in 8 minutes. cable locks are crap; cut through even the best one's with a battery powered tool in a couple of min. the worry thing was that a lot of the locks, when they were under manual attack, i.e. by hand, actually ended up damaging the frame more than the lock 8-| i dunno if anyone else has the ny 3000 but i actually find it a bit too big, especially with skinny tyres. if you had a beefy mountain bike it'd be better. kryptonite make a new york fahgettaboudit that's smaller but i couldn't find it anywhere :( |

| | I use one of the Krypto D locks. Not the heaviest ones, the next down (orange). These are just a deterrant against oppurtunists and I still think the best defence is not leaving bikes locked too far away for too long. It's a pain slinging a kilo or more of D lock in my bag so I only use it for short trips to the shops (can lockup outside my supermarket). |

| | the mini D lock is great, but I also carry an armoured cable in case I need to get round something big, it can go through the d lock. with a padlock it gives me two seperate locks if needed, and not much weight to drag. though I never leave the bike out of sight for very long... |

| | yeah, the mini d does look good. i'm ridiculously paranoid though, hence i got the 3000. the fahgettaboudit is a nice compromise ![]() i think at uni i might have to leave my bike out overnight :( no where indoors, halls don't allow bikes in side. probably end up with a 2/3 u locks and and a krypto chain :P |

| | I don't know what version they just said the fagetaboutit chain or what ever it is called. They did also cut through several hexagonal chains as well. What ever it is security is only a deterant bla bla bla ... two locks of diffrent types bla bla bla .. don't leve for extended periods (like over night) bla bla bla .. you know the rest. I am sure it is all grand mother+ eggs and all. I hate bike thiefs (actually I am nt too keen on any thief). |

| | bolt cutters are not gonna get through a d-lock. You either need to smash the thick part off with a baseball bat or something, pick the lock, or use power tools. Most bike thieves are kids with croppers, who do not have power tools, and probably wont have the balls to spend 2mins sawing through it, specially in a public area. |

| | Anyone who wants a cheap and relatively secure mini d-lock can check out discount bicycles, which has the onguard mini bulldog for "20 or so, and then ride to their industrial unit in Brixton and buy it without the P&P. The lock is ok rather than amazing (soldsecure silver) but is a handy size and a good back up lock. I use the Abus Granit steel-o-flex cable which is good for getting round oversized lamposts etc. and a pitlock skewer on my front wheel. |

| | Ive got one of the krypto leave and forget locks. Which i leave and forget outside work over night till i need it in the morning. The damn thing has started to seize up inside with rust now though. Im going to bung some light oil down there tonight but i have to yank it to get it off which leads to some interesting looks. |

| | Hi all, this is my first post on this great site! Does anyone use Sheldon Brown's lock strategy? http://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html I've asked this in another forum recently and someone mentioned that bolt cutters could easily go through the rear wheel and tire.... John |
