i don't know about anyone else, but personally i don't like the way links open in the same window, over the top of the forum.

Links that open in new windows are them most ayoning thing IMO.

Middle-click for tabs (in IE7, FF, etc)
Or Shift-click for windows (all browsers ever)

It's a user choice, you're the user you make the choice.

If I add it on, I cannot take it off for people who prefer to have links open in the current window.

i just use shift-click on my mac, no need for opening in the same window

it would be good if it returned you to the point where you left the page, instead of having to scroll back down to find where you were.

It's up to your browser to remember where to go when you click back.

The rules of the internet are that I shouldn't make decisions for you, you should be expressing them as preferences in your browser or by your behaviour.

I think in Firefox you can default all links you click to open in a new tab. I have Firefox 3 and you can do it in that (on OSX).

a combination of right clicking the link and using firefox is the answer :D
i must agree though, the intuitive way of dealing with external links is to open a new tab/page. then again, it's about the preferences of the webmaster.

It's not up to the webmaster to decide. It's up to you. I should only make suggestions in the HTML as to how things should look and how things should open. How things actually look and how things actually open is up to you and your browser.

I'm sure there are RFC's on this if someone wants to delve for them.

i would just say that i think it's very unusual for links from a forum to open in the same window, though - why take people away from the site, after all?

Just because other forums break the standard method of navigation on the internet to protect their advertising revenue, doesn't make it right.

The expected behaviour on the world wide web is that when you click a link, you navigate to it. Things like windows popping open are unexpected, and are your choice.

To be fair, I'm not holy on this stuff.

The expected thing on the internet is that links are blue, go red when hovered over and go purple when visited. Everyone changes that, so we're not exactly keeping things perfect.

I don't want to change this window thing as it makes it a pain in the arse when using mobile devices to access the forum, and it's such a small thing to middle-click or shift-click. So I figure that yeah there's justification for not making the change, even though clearly some people would prefer it.

Ideally I could make it an option and have the site render according to your preferences. But that's just work I don't want to do at the moment ;)

I'm only against content that is likely to get us blocked by workplaces. This doesn't have nudity, will be small, and isn't hosted on a dodgy site... so yeah why not.
