Islands without cars

On June the 1st I spend a gorgeous day on Rottnest island just off the coast of Perth with my daughter. Some of you know the island.
Being that this island has a ban on cars it is just fab that you get to ride around all day without fear of being run over.
Are there any such islands near the UK? As I return in a couple of weeks it would be nice to ride those islands too.
Stu.

Yeh Ed, Perth Australia. The island of Rottnest is quite fragile just limestone and sand dunes.
With paved roads around the whole island for all the bikes of course

that make sense, thought I'd have imaging having a small airport there isn't going to help keeping the island stable, need to do more research on that.

The most famous car-less island is perhaps Mackinac Island in the US:

A number of small Greek islands are carless.

@ Ed. The airport is for the Royal Flying Doctors Service and those people who can't do the 25 minute boat trip.
I was also told yesterday that light aircraft pilots who need to keep flying hours up need to fly across a body of water and do a touch and go landing.

it's those live reply thing, and sometime when you refresh the browser it doesn't show the latest few post, until you refresh it again.

it's a bit dodgy as an escort sometime.

mixing the live reply and refreshing the browser as well in a short space of time (or probably after a live post show up) does that to you.

live reply is when you can see other people post popping up without the need to refresh the browser (varies on browser I've noticed) not your own.

I've been to Venice (not vienna) and although it is (almost) car free I don't recall seeing any bikes either.

I can tell you Clovelly don't have bicycles too (as far as I remember from childhood), mostly due to the fact that it's on a cliff! pictures doesn't do jusitice to how steep it is.

plenty good car free islands around these islands.
Lundy- off Devon, go from Woolacombe ferry I think?
Brownsea- Poole from ferry.
Farne islands- Northumberland
Skomer- off St Davids Pembrokeshire

theres a couple to be going on with, could mtb on all of them but check for biking authorisation.

Didnt even start in Scotland where theres literally loads.

I've been to the Farne Islands on many occasions. Usually you can't even land there, never mind ride a bike round them. And if MC thinks Sark might be a bit small then the Farnes aren't really going to do the job.
Not sure about Skomer, but, I guess for the same reason as the Farne islands, (protection of wild bird habitat) cycling is probably prohibited.

+1 for sark, it's pretty fun. I've been a couple of times with mates on all day pub crawls and there always seemed to be loads of families having fun on bikes. Not sure I would go for more than a day or two though, as you say it is quite small

Mountain biking around brownsea island will take about 5 - 10 minutes.

A few of the Frisian Islands in the Netherlands are nearly car free, only residents are permitted to drive a car on the island and there is only a few there. Most ferries depart from Den Helder. Shiermonnikoog is probably one of the nicer islands around.

Not as warm as Rotto but less busy definately, Rotto rocks though, once did the relay swim from Freo.

Ah, OK, I think I'd come across that Wikipedia article before. Nice summary, although it has to be stressed that the German cities listed aren't really 'car-free'--they usually have large designated 'pedestrian zones', but cars for delivery, or indeed emergency vehicles, are certainly permitted under some circumstances.

@ Ma3k. Jon, you know you love the quokas. Quoka polo perhaps?

Ramon. Formentera sounds ace! and so close to Spain too. I like spain.

Dale, was it your own bike or a hire bike? either way you, bogan vandal.

Fruitbat. Sark is sounding better and better.

@ Dicki. Are the donkeys on Lamu brakeless?

@ Matty. "Island without cars" are not ropey! emo yes but not ropey.

Dicki again!! I like the Isle of Mann one day of the year, is that the one you mean?

Thanks all for your input. Gives me some food for thought for car free riding.

Someone said Sark, but Aldeny (prob wrong spelling) in the Channel Islands is almost Car free too.

And a MASSIVE +1 to whoever said Formentera, that place is so beautiful. Went there as a kid and rode around all day on some crappy hired shopper but it was ace.
Just recently got back from a job in Menorca and had forgotten how nice the Balerics are.
