New Sturmey Archer ASC on the way?

I don't know if anyone else responded to the link on Sheldon's site to email SunRace about a possible new version of the Sturmey Archer ASC hub, but if you did you might also have received the following email.

Quote:
SunRace Sturmey ArcherHello Everyone,

I would first like to thank everyone for their interest in our upcoming remake of the ASC. As we grow closer to production I will be posing questions on our blog www.sunrace-sturmeyarcher.blogspot.com regarding what you would like to see in the final production model.

The first question is regarding the acceptable amount of backlash in the hub. Meaning the amount of slack there is before engagement. The original was quite sloppy in this regard but we are interested in your opinion. The question is up now in the form of a poll and if you have a minute and could head over to the blog and add your 2 cents I would greatly appreciate it!

The first batch of prototype Fixed Gear 3 speeds is finished. The new hub will be called the S3X. The hub will be made using a much stronger aluminum hubshell. Overall gear range will be 160%.

I'll be honest, although I am hankering after one of these SunRace Sturmey Archer 3spd fixed hubs, it just seems a little bit against the spirit of the purity of fixed and singlespeed cycling.

True, it is fixed, but surely the purpose of single cog riding is that there is so much less to go wrong? How many people will feel qualified to take apart this 3spd hub and repair it themselves? At the moment, with singlespeed cycling, there is really only the chain, cog and chainring to worry about in the drivetrain.

I think its a great idea, but also, with more things to go wrong................................?

they need servicing every 1000 years. between that just a few drops of oil and a wipe with a rag.

And the gear changer.......if it gets a whack?

It does stand out from the hub axle, so could get knocked hard against something?

guess what?

Condor have them in stock, for £130, i thought that a reasonably good price, the guy there show it to me on the Tempo, work brilliantly, but it's not entirely fixed thought, it got a bit of 'freewheel' back and forth but that it.

I'm thinking about getting it for long distance ride, need to inform scott about it.

What do you mean a bit of freewheel? When changing gears?

no, overall, a tiny bit as if your chain was very slack, not sure if that was normal or not

A bit of backlash in the hub you mean? The ASC was known for having quite a lot of backlash, while the older 2-speed TF had very little.

Would you have to use these hubs on a road frame for the vertical dropouts and cable guides?

Not necessary, the Condor Tempo doesn't have any cable guide and such (it have horiztonal dropout, it's a singlespeed/fixed wheel bicycle), so it's doable to put it on a track frame.

saw the hub in the flesh at the cycle show, they look ok, not too bulky. spoke to the rep who said they are available now for £250 with bar end lever (silver and black only). He also was a little cagey when i asked him how they would hold up to skid stops.

I got a look and spoke to the rep too, who showed me the diagram from the catalogue when i complained they didn't have any opened up to display the insides.

Apparently they are based on the current 5-speed hubs. If i remember correctly, they have a single planetary gear stage with compound planets, two suns and one ring. The planet cage drives the shell in all gears. In top gear the clutch connects from the sprocket to the face of the planet cage to give direct drive. In the other two gears the clutch engages with the ring, and one sun or the other is held fixed to the axle to give the two ratios. In top gear I seem to remember there was one or two degrees of backlash. i don't know about the other gears but there is probably a little more.

anyone know if these are actually £130 in Condor? They are £248 from Spa so Condor's price seems very cheap (can't phone them from work).

If they are £130 in Condor, they are selling them at a loss as they cost more than that from the wholesaler. Spa Cycles £248 sounds more realistic. If you want one, we'll have one at Chalfont Jumble on Saturday. Might even bring one down ready built into a wheel.

Can't make the Chalfont jumble and not sure yet if I really want one, but thanks for the offer.

My fault, I may have misheard (which isn't the first time), I think they're selling for £180.

£250 seemed pretty steep.

Hi, has anybody seen the 2-speed fixed hub on e-bay? Certainly looks well made although the seller does mention "Backlash" so track stnds might be a little difficult. Apparently its based on the Sheldon Brown method, or possibly stuff put out years ago by Sturmey-Archer. Its up for £25.00 so I might have a punt at it, although of course now I've blown it by telling everybody!

I have seen it in the show and the rep told me that it will be a bit less than a kilo for the hub...more than two hubs together!!!!
