Stumbled across this photo set today. Cyclists trying to get up a 25% gradient hill.

Westernport Wall

And I thought Ditchling was tough...

A few saturday mornings around North London with our resident Hill Climbing Trainer and we'd all be alright ;o)
No, that's probably fairly brutal actually...

i like that it's steep to the point where people are falling off their bikes.

I didn't get it at first. "Why are these people using tribars for a hillclimb?"; "Why all the falling off when they're in their lowest gear?"; "What's with some of the homo-erotic outfits?"

Then it dawned on me... TRIATHLON!

Climb looks like a piece of piss, but not in the middle of a half-ironman I suppose ;P

i know their pain- just did a triathlon today- an offroad tri. The bastards decided to put a technical trail in for the cycling- fun but not after swimming.

the photos on hippy's link are actually of quite a beautiful route.

I'm confused. It doesn't even look that steep - I mean if you've got gears you can climb most hills anyway....

photos can tend to make things look flatter though.

a common problem with mountain biking shots when you want to snap someone going down a proper steep section

Fair enough, I'll take your word for it. I still don't get why everyone is eating the ground though.

i think people are slowing down too much and trying to zig-zag to keep up their momentum...which appears to be failing.

1 in 4 (25%) is definitely steep. They're falling off cos they lose all faith in their ability to go any further just as they get to the deadspot in their pedal stroke. Then they stall. It's all so confusing, they forget to unclip. Then they fall.

And they're triathletes. I don't wish to generalize, but they specialize in riding in a straight line very fast on the flat, and don't do clipping in/(out), cos they have their shoes already attached to the pedals.

Haha, out of the two, pedal stroke or just being a triathlete, I'd say the latter. I mean, I used bloody Powegrips and even with them I can pull through dead spots no problem so with clipless that's no excuse :)

I can hear their coaches now: "whatever happens, stay seated and as aero as possible, even during the climbs!"
