2009-01-24 Sat - The Tweed Run I

Ladies. Gentlemen. Announcing the first LFGSS Winter Dress Club Run: a social ride with a bit of style.

We will be gathering for 2pm in Hanover Square. Please be prompt; at 2, we'll head down to H Huntsman & Sons, 11 Saville Row to begin the ride. The route will be a fairly leisurely ride through London. No need to pack Kendal Mint Cakes, the ride will include a stop at a tea shop at Tour de Ville for mid-ride fortitude, and will finish at the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club for refreshments and cheer.

Proper attire will of course be expected, so dapper gents and elegant ladies, polish off your lugged steel beasts and prepare your best outfits. Suggested attire: woolen plus fours, harris tweed jackets, flat caps, fair isle jumpers, alpaca coats, merino wool team jerseys, cycling skirts and perhaps a jaunty cape for the ladies, cravats or ties for gentlemen, and of course a hip flask of brandy.

Be sure to dress with a bit of panache, there will be prizes awarded for:

Most dapper chap
Most dashing dame
Best moustache (open to both men and women, of course)
Most enviable period bicycle
The Doff of The Cap award for most civilised behaviour on the day

There will also be a spiffing tombola draw for some lovely prizes benefiting bikes4africa, an organisation that refurbishes bicycles and gives them to rural African schools so that students who live far away can get to school.

A big doff of the cap to those who have donated the marvelous prizes: Hudson’s Hats (The Bonk), What Goes Around Comes Around (JD), Ved, The Chap Magazine, Brooks Saddles, Hendrick's Gin, Geo F. Trumper, David Saxby's, Dashing Tweeds and Rapha.

Tally ho!

================================

Ride Update

hello old sport,

finally got the final route map now. had a bit of bother sorting out the end point but it's all tickety-boo now. thank you so much for your patience, much appreciated i'm sure.

see full details here

the ride meets at hanover square before 2pm; a respectable hour that allows for a spot of lunch beforehand, i'm sure you'll agree. now look here though, do try to be prompt. at 2pm, we'll roll down to savile row, where the kind gents from h huntsman & sons will be officially starting the ride off. it's a 22.5 mile ride across london, avoiding most beastly hills and mostly away from heavy traffic. we will be on main roads though, so do be careful, won't you?

we'll take in some super sights along the way, stopping at geo f. trumpers on jermyn street who have agreed to adjudicate the moustache prize, at the bank of england for the much anticipated dapper chap and elegant lady prizes (and providing a lovely opportunity for a group photo), then popping in to see messrs. jos and keith at tour de ville who have arranged for a spot of tea and a rapha sample sale. we'll also judge the most enviable period bicycle at their establishment. the ride concludes at the bethnal green working men's club, where the fine chaps at hendrick's gin have kindly offered to treat us to a gin and tonic or two (gratis, of course).

i hate to be a bore, and i'm sure you'll be looking positively dashing, but please do make an effort with your outfit; we've made the effort to lay on a jolly decent day for you.

the ride is free of course, but i do hope you'll consider purchasing one of our lovely spoke card for £2. this will also get you a ticket for our tombola draw for some absolutley spiffing prizes. the monies collected will benefit the worthy fellows at bikes4africa, a charity that refurbishes bicycles and ships them to Africa where they are donated to African secondary schools, and loaned to students with the longest walks to school. a jolly decent cause, i'm sure you'll agree.

a few things you might want to consider packing in your saddlebag:
1. a lock
2. bike lights (perhaps leave the dynamo lights at home though, yes?)
3. a pump, spanner and spare tube, in case of any ghastlies
4. some pocket money
5. a hip flask of sustenance

i hope you agree, it promised to be a lovely day out. looking forward to seeing you there.

yours truly,

lord teddy of holdsworth

=================================

several of the boys from down the club are meeting up for a luncheon before the grand event. won't you join us?

East - Prince Arthur, Forest Road E8 3BH, noon
South - Coach and Horses, noon
West - indecisive...
North - The Edinburgh Castle, Camden, noon
South East - Hermit's Cave, noon

===================================

right, a moment of seriousness. we did a recce of the ride tonight and decided to change one or two roads that we'll be riding. the maps that we'll be handing out will be 99% correct, but follow the crowd rather than the maps and you'll be fine. if you fall behind, use the map to figure out where we'll be next.

we have to keep at a reasonable pace to make it to our end point in time to fit in a few drinks, so we've decided to only stop at set points. if you get a puncture or have mechanical difficulties, someone will stay back with you to make sure you're fine and you can catch up to us at the next rest stop. the route snakes back on itself enough to allow you to catch up.

think about bringing the following:
- lights with fresh batteries
- lock
- bottle of water (on top of your flask)
- a-z map of london
- fully charged mobile phone, with someone else on the ride's number
- basic repair kit (spare tube, spanners, pump)
- pocket money

take a few minutes before you leave the home to make sure your tyres are pumped up, your chain is tight and your bike seems in full working order.

when we're riding, be polite to motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists, and when we're on busy roads try to leave an open lane for cars.

it'll be an amazing day! i can't wait. see you there...

I would love to do the tweed run, but alas at this point in time, have no tweed, I am actively shopping for it, and went into the lovely david saxby, and they do have new plus fours in for £55. Teddy next time you go on a jaunt round the vintage shops of london, let me know, I need to update my dapper dan cycling wardrobe...

+1 for the mens vintage shop. They guy is seriously sound. He owns the building out right too, so he can afford to keep the prices reasonable (ish).

Thats not an unusual thing for me to do. I'm an ex-tranny / club kid. And I still have a wardrobe that would make my granny turn in her grave. :-) Got the nicest bow tie from All saints today. Its not very tweedy, but still is lovely.

Awesome.

Sounds like a trip we did a while back to Holland - through den haag and back round; three days of sleeping rough - including woods, petrol station forecourts, and a city centre. we pretty much drunk Gin the whole time. but stayed true to form, and didn't remove our tweed ensembles once. had an amazing time. we're planning one to brittany one soon, then maybe one to Morocco and one in April to go clay pigeon shooting...

all in gentlemanly attire.

here are a few snapshots from the trip.
