Anyone got any idea where I can pick up a Sugino Messenger chainset? Or suggestions for an alternative inexpensive 165mm single chainset for a SS conversion.

Ta very much.

could try the 165 dotek's that alans.co.uk sell. I have them on a fixed conversion. not brilliant but cheap at £35.

You can get RPM's for £38 in Brick Lane Bikes - pretty sure that's without a chainring or BB, though...

we will crank you, RPM :)

yeah but when something's out of stock it doesn't matter if it's best or not it simply does not exist!

on my track bike i have the sugino rd2s (which i think are what you're talking about..unless you mean the sugino 75/zen messenger combo). i LOVE them. they're really stiff - i've never felt any flex, and they were a lot more affordable than 75s. those + a TA alize (or stronglight depending on what i'm doing) chainring = awesomeness.

Thanks all for the advice. Tried HubJub, but they have sold out of the Suginos - and not expected to re-stock for quite a while. Will check out the RPMs and Doteks.
One way or another I have to get this machine on the road soon...

Give CONdor a shout.

They're expecting a large shipment of Japanese kit.

UPDATE: Finally plumped for an RPM crankset from Kiwi Cycles (v. friendly & helpful, btw), but if anyone else is looking for Sugino Messengers Brixton Cycles mailed me to say they've taken delivery of some...

Cavendish had anodized 75's - not sure if they still do. I think the stuff they had was going pretty quick. Give 'em a call

Hi there.

Was just browsing some info on the sugino messenger crankset and apparently it's very noisy?!!?! Possibly down to not being set up right, but surely you can get the right chainline with with the right bits?

Anyone got any bad experiences with this crankset?

oh it's a decent little crank, dunno about the noise, used to have it in my old peugeot and didn't notice any (but then I am profoundly deaf), the reason i got it is simply for reliability.

Setup issue. Is your chainline ok? Is the noise actually from the chain/chainring/cog or the crank itself? Maybe BB noise?

I have a gold Zen Messenger Chaing Ring, brand new in package selling at the price I bought it for £45. http://www.londonfgss.com/thread12065.html

You then just have to find the spider, I got mine from Japan at around £80 before the pound against the yen was down by 25% in a month!

ah cheers guys,

i dont have this set up, yet, so the noise issues were just what i read from other people!! But i'm sure if it's set up right there should be no issues. Does it have to be a messenger ring?

any 130pcd chainring will do.
the messenger chainset are sugino rd2 cranks with a "zen messenger" influenced chainring. you wanna bigger gear - look out for the rd2 chainset - 48/50t

bear in mind stronglight chainrings - about £15 - are a tad flexy and you'll more than likely need the 103mm axle length bb - i'd suggest trying to get the sugino one if you can find them
