GPS Mapping

Hello.

I am a student studying in my last year of typo/graphic design at the London College of Communication. We have a brief set to design and make a map, mapping something about London.

I have a few ideas knocking about and wanted to get a bit of a feeler going on the forum to see if anybody would be willing to participate.

I would like to attach a small GPS tracker to some riders on the forum so i can track where people go on their bikes around London, the most populated routes and areas etc. This is all still work in progress at the moment and i have no idea how i would turn these results into a map. But all that will be sorted once i actually have the data.

If theres anybody on here who is interested in helping out by simply having a GPS tracker on your person/bike for 1 week sometime in the next few weeks/christmas/new year then please let me know so i can get some idea whether this will be feasable or not.

James

I'm a courier and I'd be interested in that. And I won't destroy the GPS by falling off ^

I've got GPS and SportsTracker on my phone. I don't mind turning it on and sending you my details if you think it'd help. Here's a link to the info I got from the Bridges ride. And yes, I am a slow bitch. And the waiting around didn't help me average speed either. :)

Cheers for the great response guys.
I am currently looking to do this with about 3/4 people at a time. (GPS things arnt cheap, and im a poor student)
Then i would get the GPS trackers back (if they arnt damaged ;) wiganwill) and pass them on to another 3/4 people.

@wools, that would be extremely helpful if you could send me those details. Would save on buying another GPS tracker. Thank you.

@wiganwill, great to have some input from a courier, would give me loads of data. Thank you.

So, so far i have:

1. chris crash
2. wiganwill
3. Sano?
4. wools (no need for a GPS tracker from me)

So, for the first trial runs im looking for one more... anybody?
Thanks again for the responses.

To be honest I'm not so sure how useful I'd be. I only use my bike for my commute to work (they're not exactly varied) and short trips around town when I can't be bothered to walk. I wouldn't be clocking up anywhere near the mileage and covering the variety of locations that the others probably do. Still...the offer's there.

thanks for the link wools, this is just what I've been looking for, for my new 6210!
although my other half is less than impressed as he is trying to write something to do the same thing at the moment!

I'm happy to be part of you experiment Hewitt, once I get this sportstracker working, i'll post a link like wools.
p.s. I'm a slow bitch as well :-)

The Sports Tracker works really well Clefty. I discovered it in the summer and mapped a load of miles on mine.

For all you iPhone junkies like myself, iMap My Ride does the same thing.

Both good free apps. Enjoy.

Wow, its so great to have so many people interested in helping.
Have just been calculating the costs of it all. Unfortunately, its way over my budget.
I would be able to do it with 1 GPS tracker, but would then run out of time to collect the data.
The tracker would have been just a little bigger than a 50p.

I have an iphone, but its the old version, so this mapmyride wont work for me.
An im sure there arnt enough fixed riders who are willing to help + have an iphone in order for that idea to work :(

I'll have to put this all on hold for the time being till i can figure out a good way to do this.
Thanks for all you input (so far) though guys. Really appreciate it.

No problems, clefty. As far as free applications go it's awesome. A lot more in-depth than I expected. If your other half needs someone to test whatever they're making I'd be more than happy to help! Gadget-geekery-ness. Love it!

@Hewitt - There are a lot of members on here. Of the regular active users there must be a few more with GPS and S60-enabled phones that'd be able to help. If they don't come out of the woodwork though perhaps try other forums like (dare I say it) BikeRadar? That'll cut costs a bit.

I just got an Edge 705 and started logging data -- depending on what your privacy and data retention policies look like, I might be willing to supply data :-P

(What the hell am I doing up at 0630 on a Sunday posting about data retention policies for? Someone should hit me.)

I'd be up for helping too, although I'm pretty much a commuter... pm me if you decide to do it again...

I've meaning to get something with gps anyway, so might be able to post data after christmas (when I'll probably get it)... pm me if/when you start up the idea again.

these tracker things would be great for an anti theft device
it might be fun to put some beaters about the place and track the theifs who nick them,
the snails trails the trackers leave would make for interesting reading / viewing
probably all heading to hackney !

I found this new one called sportypal.com
I would like to hear some opinion[FONT=Arial][SIZE=2] about this if anyone is in the mood.
Does anyone know if they are just as good on phones as the Garmin ones?
