Tractor's pretty good, my mate used to use it a while ago and I also used it to do a mates wedding years ago which meant I could just put the CD's on instead of actually DJing so I could get proper mashup!

Hey pisti,
I've never had any vinyl, and never had any inclincation to be a DJ, there's too many bad ones out there for that, good ones are few and far between, if you can mix on your bright times, god love you, I'm all for it, if you can't/won't/don't have the equipment, just lay the tracks down and let the good times roll.
Everyone's coming at this with their own flavour, no need to be prescriptive about how its done, and I'm pretty sure a whole load of these tracks didn't appear on mastercuts compilations, and if they did, so what, its all about the journey.
Looking forward to hearing your tuneage...

Yeah - this old DJ bollocks… yawn

The thread started from people with a mutual love of the soul and funk not as a showcase for wannabe 'mixologists'.

Scott does some amazing mixes that I rate and have a reaaly beautiful flow to them and I respect the care and love thats' gone into them but on the flipside I've also been introduced to tunes and artists from peoples Comps that I haven't heard before that have had me grinnin and bouncin - this in turn means I try and find out more about them and have a wider musical journey

So I don't buy the turntabalist snottiness.

If people have put love and care into it then It's all Bright Times, It's all good…

It certainly takes a lot longer to do a proper mixed compilation...compilations are not like playing out for me...playing out you do things based on how the crowd is reacting.
When i do a mixtape i'm free to go wherever i want...and if i know i'm gonna be playing that mix over and over again i want it to be good so i put a lot of effort into it.
But as corny said...there are a lot of bad dj's out there...and i'd rather here a nice unmixed compilation than a badly put together 'mixtape' anyday.
So long as the music's good it's fine by me either way.

I know it's all about tune selection and not so much about mixing skills but I'm more concerned about the whole 'vinyl buying experience', for me and many others that's more of a pleasure than actually turning on the decks and putting a mix together
Anyone can go onto websites and sit endlessly searching for stuff with no real thought, just stumbling upon tracks. "Oooh, there's a good'un, oooh, there's another, I'll have that"
I'm just being an old cynic but ipod mixing, internet downloaded mixing and the like is not for me

i like taking a chance on records, you know that feeling when you're rummaging through some charity shite? and you see this record. and you've clocked other records in the shop that give you clues as to what's going on? one of the ones near me raises money for AIDS hospices. mostly there's a load of old gash in there. horrible, horrible compilations from the 70s. but. because the records are put out in the blocks they've been received.... you start to see someone's collection. and then you've seen really bad hi NRG records. and then. and then. GOLD. moroder. all over the shop.
records with no pictures, looking at the date and label (even if it's a big one). is norma jean bell on there (she is on a raydio record of mine)? who's that on percussion?

are there a bunch of freaky looking dudes who look like they're about to:
a) take a shit load of drugs
b) lay down some serious jams
c) both motherfucker.

I like it when you go and see a band live that makes you go and look their tunes up and I think that some of the tunes I have heard on the BT Comps have made me look up more of that particular artist/s tunes, so it's all good to me.

sorry for the wall of words...but this is a blog i wrote a couple of years back on this very topic...maybe boring to some but still relevant.

COMPUTER LOVE....
As the trend for 'serato' style spinning seems to be increasing in popularity,i felt it was about time i made my opinions on the subject known.
The first thing i gotta say,and i wanna make this perfectly clear...is that just because i don't own a computer YET...doesn't mean that i'm against them.
To hate products like 'serato' is wrong. When Technics first created the 1200/1210 deck, did all the club djs of the time reject it and say "you ain't a proper dj unless you use a belt driven monstrosity that looks like it belongs on top of your dads hi-fi"...no,they welcomed it with open arms, because they knew that mixing live drums was a hard enough job already without a tempramental belt drive fluctuating the pitch even further....Sure,you CAN mix on belt drives....but then, you CAN drive on wooden wheels...but it don't mean i'd swap my tyres for em!...see what i'm saying?
Shit,if we rejected these technological advancements then house music may never have been born in the first place,as it owes as much to the drum machine as it does to the skins!
when the likes of Levan,Knuckles, and Hardy started cutting tape on reel to reels to make loops, did anyone say "fuck that man, you're a dj...you want loops, you use two copies"...no,because they knew that they were pushing things further through the use of technology.
I'm sure that had 'serato' appeared back in 'the day',then it would have been embraced for its possibilities.
My problem with the whole 'serato' thing comes from the fact that there are now a whole new breed of dj beginning to emerge that never learned the hard way...Never struggled to keep two disco tracks in time when they could barely hear a sound from the moniters...Never had some BIG ASSED girl keep bumping the decks every time you were halfway through a mix...Never tried carrying two full record boxes through a crowded club while their back and shoulders felt like they were about to dislocate....
Ever wondered why Kenny Dixon Jr arrives to his gigs with a towel over his head?...It ain't from carrying no fucking laptop! It's to soak up the sweat from carrying the weight of that box full of PURE BLACK MAGIC!
The new breed of dj is missing out on that feeling you get when you come home from the record store with that bag full of new tracks, and slide that protective plastic across your thigh to break the seal...then feel that rush you get as you place the needle on the vinyl and hear that familiar crackle for the first time...
You just can't get that feeling from pressing 'DOWNLOAD' on a keyboard.
It's the sacrifice you have to make if you decide to move away from 'THE DARKSIDE'...
Me...i'm happy where i am...FOR NOW!
It's not that i dislike the 'serato' generation for what they CAN do...i merely dislike SOME of them for trying to hide what they CAN'T do!
Don't try and impress me with how well you can fly, until you can show me how well you can WALK!
By all means embrace technology, but only ever allow it to be your mistress...never your master!
Above all else...look forward to where we're going...but don't ever forget where we came from!

Man I am stealing that!

The appreciation of good music from good people has re-ignited my love for this stuff.. there is not a day that passes where i am not carrying a tune through my head. life has a soundtrack again
Appreciating a well produced and thought out CD on your own or with friends is a world away from sharing a DJ's choice with a bigger crown. both need a real passion and understanding... two very seperate journeys..

Anyway enough of this waffle.. when is the BIG Night???
