Genesis flyer owners

Hey! bit of a nod to the fuji thread, I know, but I would be interested in seeing how people have altered their Genesis flyer.

you would bearly recognise it, i got one because the frameset is cheap so if it gets trashed i wont be too worried and the geomertry is spot on for me. took the angle grinder to the cable guides straight away mind!

I just played with mine a bit. Seems a bit contrary to buy a `classic' looking frame and then be too radical with whats hanging from it.
I did make it a `3 speed' fg/ss though to make it more versatile on longer rides in the countryside...:

I may change the handlebars at some stage. Don't use the deep drops.

Meanwhile I only just today noticed Genesis has played with the `09 colours....

*barf* not sure about that 09 colour way, quite like the black chain ring though.
Nielsamd, how does that 3 speed thing work? I've never seen that before, its just a different size gear right? do you have shifters or do you actually have to get off and re hang the chain on the other cog?

Yeah you have to get off and readjust the wheel for chain tension. But it only takes a minute or two, is barely heavier than a single sprocket fw, and can make a difference on an out/back windy day or hilly ride or just if you feel better or worse than you thought you were when you started the ride that day.

Could Flyer owners answer the following question:

What's your height and inseam, and what Flyer frame size and stem length are you riding? And are you happy with it?

I'm 184cm (6') with about 88cm (34.6") inseam and currently riding a 58cm Paddy Wagon. I also know that 58cm Cannondale (CAAD9) would be good fit for me. But the geometry of Flyer seems a bit different as the size seems to imply the length of seat tube where as with Kona and Cannondale the size comes from the length of top tube.

Firstly to Mehukatti My flyer is a 56 cm frame I am 176cm tall 79cm inside leg And I bloody Love it, I do need to get a slightly shorter stem than the one that comes with it, as the reach is a bit long for my stumpy arms, when I was choosing my bike I think I must have test rode about every bike in the shop that I was interested in and the flyer stood out a mile, for me at least, it just felt so natural.
And to Nimbhus, I'm a straight slightly woofy leo from the east midlands, My dietary requirements are Coffee, tea and Plain chocolate hobnobs,

the kinda jodhpured, big haired, David Bowie in labyrinth mode crossed with Baron Samedi from live and let die, with a chunk of big band swing thrown in for good measure.
But on a flyer.

173-174 high. Inseam 80. 56cm Flyer.
See my photo URL above to judge.
I reduced stem length down to 90 (I think stock stem on the 56cm Flyer is 120?) I am long-legged/short-torsoed and getting on in years. Am happy with it!

Straight, bourbon biscuits.

Not sure about some Flyer seat post heights I see! Its not a compact frame. Check the Flyer on page 5 in this review. My back would snap:

Have to agree with you there, although in the picture of the guy riding the flyer, the frame looks like its waaaaay too small for the dude in lycra.

i ride the "track vicar" flyer.

just added race blades for winter and added country parson chic and a ridiculous halo front wheel (white track hub and aero rim with black spokes) for added ummm... track vicar.

hey, it's a look.

actually it only really came about because some twat on an mtb t-boned me last night and turned my front wheel pringle-shaped. and so the "track vicar" aesthetic was born. i dig it anyway.

other non stock bits are, paintjob (rattlecan), soma major taylor bars, stubby stem (in top pic since replaced with stock one i must admit), cane creek lever, brooks swift and brooks bartape.

Hmm I quite like the white front wheel, are you saying you dont?? thats a real nice job you done there, Im loving the track vicar aesthetic. how are the race blades? do they clip off easily enough? I was thinking about them but not sure I can bring myself to do it.

Im 6ft 3" or so, roughly 34" inside leg i think(wear around 32" leg trousers but usually below my waist) and im riding a 60cm. Seat up not very far as can be seen below...

I bought it as just the frame set, its set up with DA cranks and post, Mavic Krysium (or Aksium?) front wheel, sytem x on an old mavic touring rim at the back (soon to be replaced) stubby d/h style stem with risers, in that pic its got a chopped brooks but now running a white wtp bmx seat. Freewheel 49/16 cranks are 180mm dmr v12 pedals.

I'm 5'10" and on the 54cm. nearly got the 56 but felt I was a bit stretched on the drops, ironic since a week after getting the bike I chopped and flipped the bars as I was never using the drops. no photo, mine is stock save for new pedals. hoping for some nitto bullhorns soon though.

cheers. the blades pretty good actually. was thrilled to ride to a gig in camden the night i put them on. it rained all evening and i arrived at the gig with a dry arse. i think they look pretty molly but they come on and off easily and work so. macca style double thumbs from me then.

@ buster, some kind of chain line issue on the fixed side of the hub right??
I have no idea, mines the 08 version on ss so far, haven't got round to buying the lockring and gear to swap it over to fixed, any recommendations on that front folks??

BBVD, took the plunge and got a flyer 08. Whilst in store got them to fit a DA track sprocket 16t on the other side of the hub and it runs fine, chain line looks spot on.

Rode the flyer a couple of time and love the ride, only thing is I need a bigger seatpost. Think the one supplied is 250mm. Anyone know where i can get hold of one of these in London?

Because if you ever crashed in to anything/anyone it would be because you can't control your bike, therefore liable to get a shoeing.

that's a flawed argument, and untrue, as I don't run a brakeless track bike with 90GI on the road.

I'm 36, I think I've already done enough growing up, but thanks for the advice.

Good for you.
And to the people who are running brakeless track bikes on the road with 90gi and who feel safe doing so then good for them too.
I ride what i ride because i like it, because i feel safe doing so and because i have yet to cause anyone any injury by doing so.

PS. May i inquire how many people who do run a brakeless track bike with 90 gi on the road you have berated for doing so this year? Just out of curiosity.

sometimes novice remove their rear brake on their freewheel bikes for aesthetic purposes, and are unable to stop properly as a result. that's the only reason I mentioned it.

the reference to brakeless 90GI was in reply to
