Record vs DA

As a rule I wouldn't use Campag due to it's stupid price and lack of compatability but I've just bought an Italian frame and feel like not using Campag would detract from the finished build. Then I thought fuck it I've used Shimano for years and never had a Japanese frame so why worry about it now. Then I got confused and needed a lay-down to decide whether I buy the Record or DA track components (hubs and Chainset) as they're both the same priceish.

Wrestling with your dilemma has obviously affected your sense of humour.

Does it matter? Really? Did I miss a bit of Dante's Inferno where he defined a level of purgatory for those who sully an Italian frame with Japanese bits?

dovoneil, mr p's no thread nazi, just doing what you should have done, search is your friend, from the beginning to the end. :-P
and my tuppence worth is, work out what your budget is, what you like the look of and stick it on the bike, asking our opinion doesn't really mean a hell of a lot as we won't be the ones riding or admiring it...

get whichever you can obtain the best discount on.

if the price is the same get shimano, because it's better*

*I like my DA drivetrain, and shimano give you nice diagrams and part numbers in english, and the importers get shit done. Campag is for bedwetters and arty-farty types who cry when they get a splinter.

No worries - what still isn't clear (to me at least) is if you're asking a question. If you are, what is it?

Not really just typing a thought or two. My ideal reply would have been a load of pictures of Italian bikes wearing Shimano jewelery. That would have made my decision for me.

Probably going to get Shimano anyway as I've seen a set of hubs for £76 incl delivery.

Perhaps, but when you're looking to upgrade a bike with mid-range components, and things like the 105 STIs cost near enough £150 and the Veloce Ergos cost half that, it's a different decision. I'm still trying to work that one out - I can get half the Veloce gruppo for the price of those bloody levers...

Both Shimano and Campagnolo make very good quality kit and provide pretty good value for money too. Some people get very precious about it though (go and look at the old C+ forum for evidence). I use Campag but that's because I prefer the shape of the Ergo levers and have all the tools I need for home maintenance.

Many Italian manufacturers fit Shimano kit to their frames. The only people who get upset about it need to put things into perspective.

I was messing with the idea of sticking full vintage Campag Record Pista stuff on my Mercian then realised I was being a complete idiot... I've got a mish-mash of Japanese/Italian bits on there and it rides/looks great... It's easy to get precious, buts it's only a bike at the end of the day...

Cheaper from Wiggle... Think I got mine for £69. In the end I just prefer the thumb downshifter - makes more sense in my head than the Shimano downshift technique.

And blah blah blah the Campags are a work of art etc.
