Riding on the A3

When i go back to uni at the end of the month Im going to be riding rather than catching a couple of buses and a train. The quickest way for me to do this is along the A3 like this:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2259182
Is that stretch of road dodgy? Or is there a better alternative route i cant see because im retarded?

i should imagine that's the same route Hillbilly rides to work every day.

won't be the nicest or least polluted route of all time, but it's not too bad. Worst stretch for me is nearing turn off for Kingston, say last three-five miles. The rest is your usual high-octane London constant-rush-hour-type traffic, which I always think we have a significant advantage in.

There appear to be quite a few 'back street' alternatives that could make for a much nicer ride, adding only a little bit of distance. Through the edge of Richmond Park for one.

I was considering the edge of Richmond Park, but to be honest i dont really mind bombing it down a busy road, but i dont like death so i always try to avoid it where possible. So i was just wondering if it was horrific to ride on.

I ride that way quite a bit, and it's OK. Not the most pleasant ride, but it'll get you there. As long as you're OK with traffic, which I imagine you are.

that bit of the a3 isn't too bad, i wouldn't want to go straight on when you fork left to kingston it's a bit mental after that. i think i would ride the long way home if i wasn't feeling too knackered

Even I would have to reconsider the section coming down the hill from Roehampton Lane to the junction at the bottom. And I ride the A4 every day.

I would personally ride south of Wimbledon Common.

you can ride on the pavement(legally) down the hill and use the footbridge if you don't fancy trying to get across the lanes of traffic if the lights are green ( i think it's 3 lanes there?)

it's an 'orrible ride (on the road) !!
A constant stream of reps in audi's late for meetings in guilford to discuss the latest porcelainware / network device. On this particular stretch of the A3 they're all simultaneously flooring it before the speed cameras in tolworth, having been stuck in traffic for 2 hours, retuning their radio from central london to surrey frequencies, trying to eat a microwaved all-day-breakfast "panini" from the bean-"cafe", reprogramming their satnav where their little angel spilt coco-pops on it that morning, and subconsciously processing the questions "where did it all go wrong" and "how can I ensure that my wife doesn't find out about the affair I'm having with the office pa".

The absolute last thing on their minds is cyclists

That's fucking funny (and sad). Tried repping you but the system, much like the universe is flawed.

That stretch isnt to bad. Its only about 2 miles any way. the worst bit is coming back from Wandsworth (no cycle lane), going in to town there is a big bus lane going up the hill so thats the slowest part of the journey covered. I've been doing the same trip for over a year now and have less trouble on that stretch then any where else I have to pass through. The secret is to just go as fast as you can.
Also if you see me going the other way please shout across the 4-6 lanes of traffic and say hello. I'm the one on the Charge Plug.

i know that route well. done it several times towards esher. although the times i did them were on very early sundays. not traffic, but for the cars that were there, they were flying at 60+mph. it's crazy along the dual carriageway between tibbets corner and start of kingston hill. outside that, should be fine. as mentioned above, lots of side street alternatives. id go through richmond park

That stretch down from Roehampton past Richmond park is horrible.

I ended up on it accidentally when just cycling around getting to know London. found myself being overtaken very close by cars going at 60,

at the bottom of the hill by the asda There was a drain without a cover which i couldn't avoid so ended up braking hard and slamming over that, mashing my back wheel and putting the shits up me. safe to say I would never take that stretch of road again.
