if you dont mind wearing a baggy camo thing, army surplu gore-tex jackets are a bargain.

I got the trousers as well, but ironically I cant wear both at the same time as id look like a soldier.

endura.

the thing is, there are varying degrees of waterproofness, and with each improvement, you sacrifice breathability.

Completely waterproof is heavy and you still get soaked as you sweat buckets.

also, get one that's specific for cycling, it's cut differently.

Endura or Altura. Go for something around the £50 or £60 price range. My first jacket was an expensive £130 Gore jobbie and it only lasted the winter. My second jacket was a £40 Altura jobbie and it lasted the winter as well as the expensive one.

Fred is right- you want something lighter - you can always put layers on underneath when it's -5 but you'll sweat like a pig in the thicker jackets.

This is depressing talking about winter and it's only September. Argh!

No no no - get the Swrve Milwaukee hoodie! This thread tells you all you need to know: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread7644.html

I have one, and I'm actively looking forward to the weather getting all crap, so that I can wear it.

I don#t know about brands, but try to get eVent,is a fabric, is most impermeable and breathable than gore, the problem is that is not windproof.

Is all about the type of membrane Gore is close, so you need to warn up first for the sweat to came out, eVent is open, so it star breathing straight away

I have a cool weather softshell thing that's showerproof, and a very light very waterproof folding jacket that I put on if it's belting it down. It's not 100pc waterproof though, will still get damp if i'm riding in pouring rain for hours, but if i have another layer underneath it it's bearable.
Kinda wanted to find something middleweight, so bought a light gilet recently which seems to work quite well. Is quite waterproof/windproof but more breathable, not least because it has no arms. Figure I can put it over the softshell when it's chilly. Folds up very small too.
Have taken to carrying one or two things that fold very small because invariably the weather gets colder/warmer and having more options means I'm more likely to be comfortable. The softshell only really comes out in the cold now.

i too have a swrv milwaulkie but am saving it for the really bad weather, i've just bought a light waterproof from the chain reaction sale as I was getting sick of my altura not drying, dogs has just bought one I believe and it dries in the drop of a hat. check on the Great British Weather thread for the link.

I had a Nike x Wood Wood Windrunner for a while which stood up pretty well. It's light and unlike the regular Nike Windrunner's it didn't look like it came straight out of TK Maxx. The downsides are that it's so thin that you'll have to wear a sweatshirt underneath and it lost it's waterproofness after a couple of months of English drizzle.

Apart from the Tech Pac one, Windrunners aren't waterproof.

Really? Well there you go, I am a fool. It seemed to be waterproof but it eventually leaked water in at the zip areas.

My Gill speed pro is eVent fabric and it's very windproof.

Just remembered I've got one of them too. The fact that I'd forgotten tells you how frequently I've used it.

there's a white Altura jacket on sale in Evans at the moment, I think it's 45 quid. I've been very happy with it and i recommend it - windproof and waterproof. I've had it about 18months and though I'd say it's probably only had medium level use compared to a courier wearing it it's still waterproof - and I've washed it with softener once, which you aren't supposed to do.

That reminds me. I once gave a christmas present to a friend that was a certain type of wash for waterpoof jackets - it apparently re-waterproofs them. I got it at blacks about £20... incase anyone wants to do that before winter hits

I got one of these for the Tour de France cyclosportive last year. Probably the best bit of kit I've ever purchased.

Trouble is, it packs down so small I've bloody lost it!

e-vent, goreXCR or the better softshell materials like gore N2S
expensive but worth it all the cheaper fabrics don't perform as well.

I recently got some 80 quid endura e-vent 3/4 trousers and I have to say I'm not impressed with them at all. I still had a soggy backside yesterday coming in, and they hadnt dried by the time I had to put them on to go home.

Disappointed of Colliers Wood.

i've given up on waterproof trousers. good old wool trousers, wet but warm in winter :) , buy them big and shrink them down so the weave is more dense ;)
