I have a shitter that I haven't upgraded at all. Well except the saddle. Maybe you have to get the level of shitness right to start, i.e. crappy but very reliable and functional (meaning, actually, not that bad).

The current count is four.
One mountain bike in the loft, requires new Bullseye cranks
One mountain bike in the shed (my old race bike) now retired and used for trailer bike pulling duties, although I'm seriuosly tempted to switch it to singlespeed, fit drop bars and commute on it.
One geared audax bike
One fixed wheel bike
One hand built frame (built by me) still in the process of being tiied up prior to having it painted.

N+1 is always allowed

Raleigh Optima conversion, fixed, for work (that's real work, not sitting at a desk or taking conference calls or teaching children to read)
Colnago Technos, 1996, geared (with Campag of course)
Colnago C95 frame which used to be my work bike but which has a BB stuck in it.

Conference calls can be very taxing. Sometimes I even stay awake. It is best to have someone with you who knows what they are talking about.

Fixie (some would describe it as a shitter, but I love it, old holdworth road bike)
geared road bike (was broken, now I have all the parts, just have to put it together)
Mountain bike, again broken...

So only one working, and two taking up space. But around the 27th of the month I will have 2 working bikes, the broken MTB and a frame to make a nice fixie with...

When I lived in a flat it was one in a bike box outside kitchen and two in the hall by the front door... now I live in a house with an alley way.

My bike lust started in 1984, right after the olympics that year. I've recently started trying to track down an 84" raleigh professional frame, in the Panasonic team colours... (remember that one?)

I own one at the moment mainly because I am poor, and the other being I have no space for a second. I am thinking of upgrading through the cyclescheme though.
