i though rapha took the name of the 50/60's brand(or cycling club)and adapted it to rapha, i may be wrong, it i only a vague recollection of reading that!

^ I have one of those (a Prendas replica) it's a French aperitif brand that sponsored a 1960s team. The name was also adopted by VC Rapha on the English south coast. Also, there is an inferred reference to Raphael Gemianani...

yeah, i think it does, as I said in my first post as counterpoint to my general negativity. I really like to follow these sort of companies as they seem to do a lot of things well and i find it interesting. Howies is another one that I watched closely. Maybe I'm just bitter Because I'll be a poor student for the foreseeable future. Even if I was minted though I would still be wound up by the haughty marketing.

No. Maybe I should! They probably wouldn't shift as much but I still find it a little crap, especially coupled with their 'sophisticated, sporting gent' identity.

Good point. I'm (comparatively) minted yet still prefer Assos to Rapha. Despite (because of?) the slickness of their marketing etc, I still can't help feeling that they would be laughing up their sleeves as they took my money...

Tom Simpson was sponsored by Rapha, the original brand. Dunno if they bought the rights to it or resurrected it.

Whatever. Pay your money take your choice. Mac or Microsoft, Campag or Shimano, Rapha or Assos.

In terms of Classic performances, 1963 and 1965 were probably Simpson's best years. Riding in the distinctive black-and-white colours of the Peugeot BP team. in 1963, he won the gruelling motor-paced event Bourdeaux-Paris, was second in Paris-Brussels and Paris-Tours, third in the Ronde van Vlaanderen, 8th in Paris-Roubaix, and 10th in both La Flèche Wallonne andGiro di Lombardi.

These boys make nice jerseys and they ship directly from the factory in Switzerland if you ask them nicely http://www.vintagevelos.com/clothing1.html

of course if you prefer 'pink' then you probably won't like this stuff

Yes, this is one of the things that annoy me most about Rapha. It means it's impossible for me to make a statement by refusing to buy any of their clothing.

the team was indeed sponsored by St Raphael and for at least one season were actually called "Rapha" and the jersey just said "Rapha" too....think it was Wayne who posted the jerseys somewhere on this here forum....oh, here they are on this page: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread6627-2.html

VC St Raphael did also adopt the name, think my dad mentioned it was because they got a load of free St Raphael jerseys....then just stuck with it.

It's cos women only actually ride bikes in order to attract men. Of course.

(And I am even less impressed with Rapha after this evening's shambles ride.)
